Thought I would share a quick update on the differential whine...
Have put a few hundred miles on it since I serviced the diff. It has really quieted down a lot. There is really no longer a whine, more of just a "whoooooshing" sound. Could be tire noise though. Seems like the new oil just needed a few miles to work its way into the bearings and nooks and crannies. Would really like to dump and fill it again soon though but "life" gets in the way for now. Maybe next month.

I don't think that will be necessary. A second oil change wont stop the noise. My was whining, I replaced with red line shock proof oil. It is a heavy duty synthetic.. It helped some I run the same in my Harley trans.
What did you use.?

Mobil1
I really only want to change it again because the original sludge that came out was milky. Not terribly so, but still. Just want to make sure I get as much water and gross out of it as I can. Seeing as it's an easy procedure, used a LubeLocker gasket, it's just a matter of the weather. It rains every day this time of year and I would like to drain and fill the transmission again on the same day as I don't like making multiple trips to the recycling facility.

Milky is a sign of water invasion. Check the vent hose for secure fit, and that it is still strapped up high. Also high water can invade axle seals. When it sits in high water enough.
I had a dodge van. I ran it through soo much high water. Ruined everything inside. Cheapest for me to find a complete unit from salvage, instead of buying parts.

I was thinking of changing my rear diff to royal purple 75w190 and looking on amazon it says does not fit your vehicle. Anyone know why that may be. Correct vehicle selected and correct options selected. Also I see different labels of the motorcraft friction modifier xl-3 is that the correct stuff I need to add

75w140. Full synthetic. No friction modifiers needed since you do not have unlimited slip differential on the back of your truck.

3.73 non-ls

Finally got around to popping the pumpkin open and changing the fluid. It is so much quieter now but I can still hear a little bit of whining when the rear window is down. It is not loud (anymore). I am assuming this is typical? Would a heavier oil quiet it down more? I used Mobil1 75w-90LS.
I used a LubeLocker gasket so have no problem opening it back up and putting in 75w-140 if it will help. Thanks.

Edit:
The old oil was nasty, almost milky. Not much on the filler plug magnet but it was caked with a white, milky sludge. As far as I know it had never been serviced before.

Rear ends are pretty durable….like a manual transmission. Just big gears in oil..R/R oil at least every 100k if your a cheapskate..60k if you care…30k if it’s your baby…I use Walmart syn 75/140.. because I’m cheap and I change it every 50k ..all my 5 s/t 1 s have 250k.
Only one destroyed when ran out of oil while son was working in ft lauderdale
Yea…he heard it …. Here’s why… The breather vent tube is a cheap rubber
hose that comes off the rear end…it turns 90 degrees to vent high up over the rear end…over time that rubber tube cracks and splits at the 90 degree turn and very slowly dribbles out the rear end fluid…not fast. Over a couple years. If you don’t check it or change…
Crash boom bang waisted rear end..
It will whine for attention for 6 months
Screeming hey I’m out of oil..
CHECK THAT HOSE. !!!!!

After scratching my head\butt over what GearOils to use for
RearLimitedSlipDiff + FrontOpenSlipDiff in 2001 SportTrac4WD &
RearOpenSlipDiff + FrontPowerTransferUnit\PTU in a 2008 EdgeAWD,
decided to go with
~ half AmsOil#75w140.FullSyn
~ half AmsOil#SAE250.FullSyn
~ AmsOil#SlipLockFricModifier
All in a premixed SharpyMarked gallon ReadyToUse for any Diff\PTU: minimizes number of bottles around,
& provides premium lube especially for the PTU (next to CatCon, stupid Ford AWD design runs hot, cooks oil).
Doing this for about a year now; change oil in PTU every 6mths, Diffs every 3years.
