Transmission info

How do I find out what type of transmission that I have in my 2005 sport track I know that it’s automatic but I don’t know her the specific TYPE of transmission that’s in the My ST, I want to be able to correctly identify the transmission I have.

Assuming your 2005 ExST is factory stock unmodifed & is 2WheelDrive (not 4WD)?
* Engine = V6~4.0L~SOHC
* Tranny = 5r55e.2WD, Compatible\Swappable with any 2001~2011 5r55e.2WD Tranny
* 4x4TransferCase = None
Note:
* 1997~2000 5r55e.2WD Transmissions are NOT Compatible\Swappable due to different Sensors+Case
* 1997~2011 5r55e.4WD Transmissions are NOT Compatible\Swappable due to different OutputHousing

5r55e Transmissions use MerconV ATF; capacity is 12~13qts.
Recommend every 6mths, suctioning ~1qt from TrannyDipTube & replacing with fresh MerconV.
Recommend every 33kMiles, a PanDrop & ATF+Filter Change & BandAdjust & new PanGasket;
this will change out about half of the ATF or 6~7qts.
Recommend every 100kMiles, new SolenoidPack & ServoORings & ServoGasket for the ValveBody.
5r55e.2WD Transmissions were stock fitted with Shallow2WD versions of the Pan & Filter;
recommend swapping these out to the Deeper4WD Pan+Filter, during the next 33kMile service.
Around 2002~2003 the 5r55e ValveBody was improved with a BondedGasket & other components.
If unserviced, 5r55e Transmissions are notorious for slipping & failing to engage Reverse\Drive.
Recommend a 2ndParallel or larger TransCooler, in the front grill, especially if you tow.

Sorry, fairly ignorant on the V8~4.6L Engine & DriveTrain; sometimes do wish I had a 2010 SportTrac V8.
I'm sure ToddZ &\or several other members are experts there.

I posted a few weeks ago about an issue w/tranny and I think it kinda fits in this discussion.
The shift to reverse is fine when its cold, but after driving for even a few miles, this shift to reverse is hard enough that I am afraid of it doing some damage.

Hey Mr. Dillard, I have a 2004 2WD with the 5r55e tranny and I found out yesterday the transmission was replaced in 2007. Do you or anyone else here know if there were any issues with this type of transmission at the onset? The replacement is doing great with 137,000 miles.

* 1st option to try is HandPump ~1qt ATF from TrannyDipTube, replace with fresh MerconV;
drive this ~50miles, repeat 2~3 times to see if issue is improved\resolved.
* 2nd option is a 33kMile Tranny Service: PanDrop, new Filter & PanGasket & 6~7qts ATF, Bands adjusted
How many miles since last Tranny Service ?
* 3rd option is a 100kMile Tranny Service: new VB Solenoids & ServoGasket+ORings & BondedGasket.
May have a leaky or blown ValveBody Gasket, causing pressure loss & slow\hard shift to Reverse.
* 4th option is a new\rebuilt ValveBody.

5r55e Transmissions are commonly known to suffer slipping, hard shifting, loss of reverse ...
Any Replacement\Rebuild\Install is certainly subject to the mechanics skill\motivation.
Recommend every 5kMiles\6mths: HandPump 1qt ATF from TrannyDipTube, replace with fresh MerconV.
Recommend every 33kMiles: PanDrop, new Filter, new PanGasket, new 6~7qts MerconV, Bands adjusted.

Works but very slowly… Tranny light dash on….any ideas. To keep it running..seems like it on its way out…

should I just go to a trans shop and have all the work done ? (fluid, gasket,O-rings ....)

Cant recommend any shop, do this yourself if possible. If not, and you have a trusted mechanic, that is an option. Be specific about what you want done.

I found a shop that stated they could change the fluid, gasket and filter (basic trans service) for $125.
He stated that they do not have the equip' to flush the system, so all they really change is 1/3 of the fluid.

Does this sound correct ?

Here is a video of trans repair with the described issue (harsh reverse) the same as what I am experiencing.

Does the reverse servo typically fail ? In the video they totally skip why the trans was behaving that way.
