Are you sure it isn't timing chain rattle? It sounds a lot like pinging, but it has nothing to do with fuel, and it occurs mostly between 2000 and 3000 RPM. Maybe this isn't the case for you, because I think the timing chain rattle is especially strong when under load in 2nd gear, not at...

The computer software rebooting idea is worth a try. It costs nothing. To speed it, I would try disconnecting your car battery and then reconnecting it. I had a different transmission problem, what seemed to be a flare or slipping when upshifting from 2 to 3. After a few weeks it went away...

I would suspect the IAC Idle Air Control valve. It happens often for this engine. Three times for me, so far, since buying my ST new in 2000. It is very easy to remove the IAC. Spray some carb cleaner in it, wipe it out, see if that helps. Costs practically nothing. Or go ahead and order...
