The axle is from a 2001 Sport Trac with 127K
The whole axle might score you disc brakes if you don't already have them. But that adds the extra cost of new rotors, calipers, etc.
I'm wondering what the easier remove and replace would be.

2001... will have drums.

Probably be easier to do the whole thing. If you are only doing the diff guts you might as well just rebuild the one you have.

I looked at the "whole axle" with the differential today. It was a mess - Missing parts, looked like it had been sitting outside for 10 years. I think I will go ahead with just the differential from the other source. Any red flags for anyone? And, go with the used with 110K for $400 vs. new Yukon from Autozone for $1230? + Installation of course. https://www.autozone.com/powertrain...ifferential-ring-and-pinion-10435/1046031_0_0

Here I am so far!

I would swap over the breaks, add oil and install it. Then you can build your original the way you want with the gear you want and carrier you want.
