I agree that it could be kaput, I can't really determine that until get it open. Note that when I state "sealed" I mean no screws or clips to open it - it is by no means actually sealed, as I was able to get contact cleaner sprayed inside. I guess, since that seam area is inside the shift motor...

2001, gen 1. Does anybody know how to open the 4WD shift motor position sensor? This one is supposedly a third generation, sealed position sensor. As shown in the first image, it does come apart, but when I tried, the outer case started cracking at the "seam" (blue arrow area).

I am looking for a source of the FMC "2001 Workshop Information", or a copy (I somehow cracked mine).

The wiring diagrams have GOT to be better than the crazy back and forth of the CD. Although, screen captures of diagrams are nice. I have PayPal!

While it is true that the parking brake is mechanical, the BRAKE light is multi-functional. How's the transfer case motor?

Would it make a difference in the long-term to, instead of leaving some mix of V and VI, flush the transmission to replace all the fluid?

This is not true. True is that only one of the three mounting bolts have an extension with hex end (#4 in the diagram). The top two have typical threaded stock in plastic mount that can be adjusted by removing the headlight assembly (see image (#6 in the diagram)).
