Anybody get a 15K mile checkup at a dealer? I was quoted $70. Seems a little excessive for an oil change, tire rotation, fluid check, and general inspection. What did you guys pay?

I just had the 12K service at my dealer that included all those same things (only tangibles are oil change and tire rotation), and was charged $52 total.

All that stuff listed could have been done in your own driveway in an afternoon.

My dealer gets to look at my Trac sitting in the parking lot when I come to say hello to everyone. Most of the salesmen come out to see what else I did to my Trac. They all went goo-goo-gaa-gaa over the rear disc brakes with the red painted calipers.

I notice two red flags on this myself:

First:

If you were 1.5 quarts low on oil, they should have not charged you for the

extra, as you were having an oil change done anyway. They should have told you

that you might have an "oil consumption problem":

Second:

I thought all of our tracs had non-lubeable chassis (ball joints, tie rods, etc...)

so if you have the factory suspension, this sounds like a rip-off to me.

Other Thought:

Battery Service...If they charged you 88.94 (+ the 10.63) they BETTER have

replaced your battery with a brand new one, and not just charged it. and at 15,000

miles it should have been under warranty!

I was just given a price of $172.00

Here is what myford.fordvehicles.com says should be done.

* Change engine oil and replace oil filter (Up to 5 qts of motor oil)

* Inspect and lubricate steering linkage, ball joints, suspension and, if equipped, half shafts drive shaft and u-joints

* Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system

* Inspect engine cooling system and hoses

* Inspect wheel ends for end play and noise

* Perform multi-point inspection

* Rotate tires for optimal tire life

Mobil 1 and filter....$24 +/-

Oil disposal at recycling center....free, maybe 50 cents worth of gas to get there.

Tire rotation AND balance at my bud's shop.....$10 :D (I send him a lot of business. For rotation only, he charges me $4.)

Walk around truck with a can of WD-40 or white lithium grease....basically free.

I just had mine done last Tuesday. I have free maintenance for two years so all I had to pay was $25 to have the tires balanced before rotation. I noticed on Saturday that they did not replace my air filter. Is that part of the 15k service? I looked at the site of the dealership that did my service and they don't have it listed as part of the 15k service. Just wondering if they did a half ass job.-Heather

Like I said, DDarinD, I had all that same stuff done for $52 in the 12K checkup.

Any "good" dealer that you bought the vehicle from should do most of the "inspect" items you listed free of charge, as part of other service whenever you bring your vehicle in. Mine does.

Like Tom said, the 15K checkup could be done in a few hours in the driveway. Did my own tire rotations, oil changes, air filter changes, etc. Never took my Trac to the dealer for any 'scheduled maintenance'. It's all a ripoff.

Yeah, Darin, many dealer service centers do rip you off. Mine doesn't.

I did have a Chevy Impala bought at a local dealer. They ripped people off. And, they wouldn't stand behind the product at all. Had some problems prior to the warranty expire that weren't documented well by them (their issue) that got worse when I went off warranty by miles (but not years). And, the part was a multi-function switch that wouldn't dim anymore, which is much more related to years in its usage than miles (only so many night drives possible in a few years).

Anyway, they had the nerve to look back at my service records and say: "Well, if you had only been a more regular service customer we might be willing to 'throw you a bone!"

I told them to go F themselves in no uncertain terms. I tried to use them for oil changes and the like, but having to schedule to drop off a car for a day, and pay $35 instead of $25 which is what the local, reputable walk-in guy charges just didn't appeal to me...go figure.

The book says to replace the air filter at 30k. I change mine when it gets dirty. DO get a tranny flush and fuel filter at 30k as per the book.

I called back the dealer that gave me a $172 est and asked for service manager. I told him I had called around and everyone else was a lower price for 15000 He said he was sorry, because I was told the wrong thing. There price would be 34.95 (the Works package) This included the items listed for 15000 by ford. Only an extra charge if air filter needs replaced.

They didn't make a mistake ddarind, you caught them on their attempt to gouge. They would have charged you that if you let them. Many dealers do this. You got the "soccer mom" pricing.

My closest local dealer quoted me $450 for the 30k service when I got my truck back on a warranty item. I told him he was insane (or something to that effect) and that I would do the work myself. It's the same dealership that tried to rip me off to buy our Trac in the first place. I guess they were just trying to get even for losing that sale. I've never been back. Avoid Tomball Ford like the plague.
