Hello from historic Folsom, Ca. I enjoy reading this site although I just drive a stock Sport Trac. I bought my 2001 Sport Trac locally brand new and it now has 187,000 miles on it. I have had only had two maintenance issues, replaced the thermostat @ 100,000 miles (did it myself!) and a snapped valve spring at around 125,000 miles. It's been a great vehicle. Is this common with this year ST? ...or was I just lucky?

It is common. Look around. You see TONS of Explorers on the road. IIRC, 1997 was the first year for that engine. So, At a conservative 14,000 miles/year, the average 1997 Explorer would have 140,000 miles on it and your average 2001 Trac would only have 85,000 miles on it.

We have a 2000 Explorer with 147,000 miles on it. My brother has a 1999 Explorer with 160,000 miles on it, and my brother-in-law has a 1998 Explorer with 190,000 miles. All run great.

Zach, I'm really a novice at mechanics, all I did was go to whoever changed oil & filters (Pennzoil 10W-40) the cheapest and I did it every 5K miles +/-. We changed the coolant and trans fluid at 100K. That's about it. Thanks!
