My wife was driving and The overdrive off light started flashing and just shut offAnd now if you try to start it or it it just sputters for a second and then shut off it's got fuel to the rail I'm lost

Welcome to the forum! A couple of questions:

Have you tried spraying a little StarterFluid into the Intake?
If it then starts & runs for a few seconds, it's likely a fuel problem.
if it does not start at all, it's likely an ignition problem.

Which version of the 2001 SportTrac V6~4.0L~SOHC engine, Job1 or Job2?
Job1 version has the OilFill on the left ValveCover & VariableIntakeManifold that looks like a pretzel.
Job2 version has the OilFill on the right ValveCover & a revised IntakeManifold design.
A clue would be the assembly date on the drivers doorframe sticker. Post a pic of your engine.
Click here for more on Job1\Job2 differences.

Do you have an OBD2 Scanner that reads StandardSAE & ProprietaryFORD TroubleCodes?
Blinking "OD Off" lamp indicates a 5r55e Transmission issue, but start by reading the TroubleCodes;
it could be something as simple as a bad ThrottlePositionSensor or may be something more serious\expensive. Again you need an OBD2 Scanner & the TroubleCodes.
Click here for more on OBD2 Scanners.

Generally, what is ownership+maintenance history & mileage+usage+condition?
~ Last Transmission ATF+Filter change
~ Last FuelFilter change
~ Last Plugs+Wires+CoilPack change
~ Last OxygenSensor change
~ Any recent maintenance or damage

More info in your profile+signature would help others answer questions.

Again, best to get the ODB2 TroubleCodes as a starting point.
Sounds like you've possibly got more than one issue.

Was she 100% it was the OD light and not the CEL ?? could be ignition related, Crank sensor, or something else... IF the torque converter is stuck it will jam it up from running... Could even be a clogged cat converter.
