Adam,
I do agree with you.
Here is something I do not think Ford thought of, but should have.
The Ranger is in dire need of a redesign. They aren't slated to design a Ranger until 2008, if not later. Ford is hurting. Why invest the money into a new Trac when the Ranger needed it more then the Trac did. Now, take the front of the Explorer frame, and convert the rear part into a sold axle design. Now you have a frame that can be used for both the Trac and the Ranger. Throw the Explorer's body on the Trac, as it looks now, and design a new Ranger using the frame from the Trac. You have a wider, more stable frame for both vehicles, yet you cover two vehicles, not just one.
People are not buying SUV's like they used to. People still like the pick-ups because of the use of hauling large items. Now Ford has the option to offer a V8 to go head to head with the Dakota and they beat Nissan and Toyota in power with an optional V8. They also can boast more towing power against the Ridgeline. IMO, it would be a win-win for both Ranger owners and Trac owners.
Ford needs to get themselves out of the slump they are in. They are loosing market share on the small truck market. Ford would now have a truck that is small enough to fit in a garage, yet tow up to 7,000 LBS. That would put them right in line with the competition.
Why invest all that money into a new Explorer when the current design is only 3 years old?
I just think, as usual, Ford is missing the mark.
See where I am coming from?
