All Over the East Coast,
Bored. Photoshop. It doesn't look half bad with a color-matched grille.

Not to post a reply to my own post so soon, but... :)

I wonder how long it'll take Ford to throw some circular fog lamps on the bumper. It seems the normal year changes involve this modification.

Think..

F-150s (both the previous generation and the 2004+) changed.

Explorers (1995-1998 then to 1999-2001) changed.

The fogs on the new Trac look like the 2004-2005 F-150 fog lights.

Just a thought to kick around.

Nope. You are right. I forgot. The Trac is the only one without a solid axle. The market doesn't demand it.

Although I know what we say really won't change Ford's opinion, I can't help but wonder the 'why' for the IRS. I realize that the Explorer and Sport Trac now share a relatively common tooling, and this is a good way to save on costs. If the industry needs anything, it's to avoid losses.

However, I know that MyST consists of the few vocal owners of Tracs and not the entire owning population. I just wonder how often Joe Blow came home and said to his wife, "You know, I really like that Trac, but the damn ride isn't as good as it can be. They need to drop that solid axle." Maybe a few thought it, but I can't see non-automotivephiles (I make up words) ever saying a word about the undercarriage of their vehicle. Instead, the common line would be, "It's a truck. It is supposed to ride like this."

Just some musings...

Adam,

I do agree with you.

Here is something I do not think Ford thought of, but should have.

The Ranger is in dire need of a redesign. They aren't slated to design a Ranger until 2008, if not later. Ford is hurting. Why invest the money into a new Trac when the Ranger needed it more then the Trac did. Now, take the front of the Explorer frame, and convert the rear part into a sold axle design. Now you have a frame that can be used for both the Trac and the Ranger. Throw the Explorer's body on the Trac, as it looks now, and design a new Ranger using the frame from the Trac. You have a wider, more stable frame for both vehicles, yet you cover two vehicles, not just one.

People are not buying SUV's like they used to. People still like the pick-ups because of the use of hauling large items. Now Ford has the option to offer a V8 to go head to head with the Dakota and they beat Nissan and Toyota in power with an optional V8. They also can boast more towing power against the Ridgeline. IMO, it would be a win-win for both Ranger owners and Trac owners.

Ford needs to get themselves out of the slump they are in. They are loosing market share on the small truck market. Ford would now have a truck that is small enough to fit in a garage, yet tow up to 7,000 LBS. That would put them right in line with the competition.

Why invest all that money into a new Explorer when the current design is only 3 years old?

I just think, as usual, Ford is missing the mark.

See where I am coming from?

I can agree. Since 1991, the Explorer and Ranger shared tooling (well, a significant amount of tooling). It seems with the latest shift, the Ranger is left high and dry as a loner in the manufacturing process.

Can you p/c the front a solid color' BUT leave the chrome strip on the hood, or add a bug guard??

SportTrac(k)ers, it is good to see what we think that Ford should do, but as a consumer who buys FORDS exclusively, what are we to do. I too, want them to re-design the Ranger so bad, but even they must see that they are getting behind all these other"trucks" in that class, but choose to do nothing about it. I don't ever want to buy foriegn vehicles because I don't want to help them come up, even if I have to buy a GMC product!(ugh) What must they be thinking. I agree that the Ranger needs most or much of what Cayman is espousing they do. Whay not offer a choice of axles! Get real FORD!
