Hi all. Just found the site and I am about to buy a new ST with the V8 (4X2). I never thought I would ever buy a truck, but started looking at them to tow my car to various events or shows. I dont like a single truck out there, but I have completely fallen in love with the ST. I was told by one sales guy (specializing in fleet type truck) that towing a car on a trailer with a ST would be horrible handling, especially up and down any size mountain...said I needed a longer wheelbase to tow properly. I told him the car only weighs 2200lbs and even a duel axle trailer would keep it WELL below the stated 6800 lbs towing capacity, but he said it did not matter.

Has anyone towed a trailered car a good bit that can give me some feedback? I really love the ST but would hate to get it and it not be a very wise choice to go around the country with my baby in tow. Thanks much and look forward to yapping with you all and maybe see some of you at up coming events if I get me a ST.

My best,

Haley

Ford F-150 Reg Cab Short Bed, 126" Wheelbase

Ford F-150 Reg Cab Long bed 144.5" Wheelbase

Sport Trac, 4x2 130.5" Wheelbase.

Yup, looks like the wheelbase is too short to tow anything. (It is 4" longer then a regular can short bed F-150)

Find a new salesman. That guy is a complete Melvin.

I have an '07 v-8 ST and it handles great. I have loaded the bed a few times but have not had the chance to tow anything yet. I cant fore see any problems with towing less than the rated tow capacity and having problems. The suspension is pretty damn good in the over 6K miles I have on it and the power is definitely there when you need it.

Its pretty damn long too, around 17 1/2 feet and like Caymen said its got a good size wheel base.

Salesmen are not really good for much.

Haley,

I just went to NJ to help my friend move all of his stuff 2 Va...I have the 07 v6 and not only did i load up the bed with everything and anything but I also packed a 12ft trailer to the hilt and pulled that for 450 miles handled like a champ...wish you the best on whatever u buy, car sales people are pinheads

Bill

Thanks for all the replies! I kinda figured that the guy was wanting me to get an F-150 or higher. I just dont need that much, not to mention I dont care for the look of them, unless it is a flare side crew cab.

I dont know what it is, I really do NOT like trucks or SUV's, not a single one has ever caught my eye but I have the bug bad and will order the ST within a few weeks.

Bill...great info, thanks! And with you towing a UHaul type trailer (big box) and it handling well, I do think I would be just fine carrying a curvy little car. :D

Haley,

I have a 2004 ST and regularly tow a 23' travel trailer with no problems. This summer, I towed it from VA through the mountains to IL when we moved, and the ST performed like a champ.

Given the fact that the '07 ST has a longer wheelbase and the V8, you shouldn't have any problems towing a car on trailer.

Haley, Good luck with the ST if you get one. By the way, what kind of car are you towing and showing? Is it a Ferrari? Got pictures? I noticed your member signature.

I have an 07 V8 on order and plan to use it for towing as well. If all I wanted was a truck I would have kept my 02 Ranger FX4. Problem is it wouldn't tow a fart. I have several Fords I plan to tow including a lifted 75 Bronco, a pro-street 67 Ranchero and a 70 Mach I.

Thanks again for all the new replies! Called a different dealer, and will go in this week and order up a nice new ST! :D

Fred, yep...will be towing a Ferrari...a model of a 62 250 GTO. It is not an original. Built from basically the ground up by my roomie with a bit of my help. We still have a ways go on it, but here are a few links. (Sorry if a few pics are a bit large)

"Mickey" is far from done, still have some tuning up to do and trim inside and out to make. Will finish by spring 08.

Now that is cool. I don't know squat about Ferraris but I'm guessing the V-12 is from a later model?

Thanks! it is fun and all, and a huge pain in the butt. To be honest, I think I am more excited about the ST than the final detail stages of the car.

blksn8k, good eye, it is a BMW engine. The car used to be a Datsun 280Z. The only part left from it is the sunvisors, headliner and door jams. The chassis too, but it has been modified and beefed up.

The rear trunk, fuel cell, body panels...interior, dash, engine compartment...everything...is all done by hand...mostly my roomie with my help, and I do the buffing, sanding and all the parts to make it look all spiffy and clean.

Total project time will finish up this spring at 2000 hours+. Just in time to load it up and take it to various tracks and events around the good ol' USA for the 07 driving season.:p
