Bringin Bossy back: Ford dusts off a vaunted nameplate and gets back to track-day business.

BY STEVE SILER

August 2010

Bullitt. Cobra. Shelby. Mach 1. Fords charismatic Mustang has taken on many roles, many forms, and many names during its 46-year history, and the companys modern marketing machine has pillaged pretty much all of them in the past decade. Boss, however, has stayed largely in the shadows, adorning a few track-only specials sold in extremely limited quantities.

The Boss Mustang is hitting the streets once again in the form of the track-oriented Boss 302 unveiled at the Rolex Historic Races at Laguna Seca. According to the company, the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 is the quickest, best-handling straight-production Mustang ever offered by Ford. It pays homage to its track-star forebears by lightening and strengthening key components, juicing up the engine, and wrapping it all in the vintage color schemes that Boss Mustangs are known for still today.

must say 412 HP NA is pretty cool, alot of folks are really hyped about the 302,But its a 302 in displacement only, still a modular moter.

gah why am i a poor college student!!!!

So that in a few short years, you can walk into your Ford dealership, get a loan approval from Ford credit and drive home in the car of your dreams, that's why. :driving:

haha oh yea, good call there Mustang Guy haha

love how that BOSS looks, maybe a new MACH 1 will be created as well around when i graduate...

anyone know if theyre bringing back the Mach 1 anytime soon??

Don't expect to see the Mach back anytime soon. Ford usually likes to have one model between the GT and the Cobra, and this will fill that void for a few years.

The under carige of the exhuast set up, has me confused...What is with all the flex crossovers????

Can't wait to see what these cars become when the aftermarket catches up.

I feel that it is to bad that they are dropping the Mercury line as they could bring back the Couger Eliminator too. That was one hot sleeper of a car.

Agreed. The past few years, I've been hoping the retro craze would continue just long enough to bring back a rear wheel drive, V8 powered Cougar with styling cues from the '69-'70. I would have loved to have a new one to go with my '69. The demise of Mercury was heartbreaking to say the least. Understandable, though.
