4x4 light comes on then goes off

I have a 2001 Sport trac. I drive about a mile down the road and then my 4x4 high and low light will flash on and then shut off. If i use my 4x4 it takes forever to kick in and then sometimes it will not disengage until it wants to. The manual states to take it to the dealer if this happens. Has anyone had this before and taken it in? Is this something I can fix or give the dealer hundreds to look at?

Sounds like the module is bad or the motor on the t-case is stuck on stupid...
