It was 7 degrees on Thursday morning and had snowed the night before. My rear brakes made a momentary loud squeak whenever I applied the brakes at slow speed, such as when pulling out of the garage or parking. Is this a sign of a problem, or was it just the ST complaining it was too cold to be out of the garage? The sound has gone away now that it is warmer.

Nelson, I've just noticed slight squeaking..could be ya just had some road grime. Does your state use sand/salt mixture if there is snow on the roads?

Yes they do, and it has all melted onto my garage floor. I figured it was nothing. :)

Do you and LY still frequent the chat? I have been MIA for quite a while there.

I'm with Caymen. Well not really, he is in Ohio and I'm in Connecticut. BTW my brakes are quiet. I use Performance Friction pads and have no sqeaks. The same was true with the OEM pads.

Nelson, she says she doesn't feel like being online right now. It's been a while, I miss her. Hope all is well for her, thanks for asking.

I just scheduled my 15k maitenance for next SAT, Guess they will check my brakes and other stuff too. They charge *149.95. Didn't think that was too bad of a price to pay for not having to break a nail. :)

In order to make noise, something has to be vibrating. If the caliper pins are well lubricated with grease and the back of the pads have an adequate anti-squeal (vibration dampening material or compound) there should not be any noise. I do my own brakes on all my cars and never had a squealing problem.

BTW Larry Phillips/NX-01 my pads are carbon metalic and do not squeal, sqeek or even peep.:)

I have Carbon Metallic pads on the following vehicles.

1993 Ford Aerostar

2004 Ford Ranger

2002 Explorer Sport Trac

1998 Ford Taurus

1999 Ford Taurus

1998 Ford F-53 Motorhme Chassis

1986 Ford E-350 Motorhome chassis

1999 Ford Explorer

No squeaking what so ever. On the Trac, I still have the front rotors and turned them for the first time at about 55,000 miles. The Machine shop only had to remove about .005" off of them.

Could it be the brake pads?

 It might be something else, but it didn't used to squeal like this until I changed pads. I'll take a look when I change the balljoints.

Do you guys get heavy brake dust?

The dust is about the same as ceramic pads, the difference is the color of the dust.

The braking power is worth the dust, IMO.

My Trac does not make a sound. However some of the equipment we have at work squeeks when the breaks are aplied and it is usualy because of break dust.
