I went into the Ford Service center awhile back just to figure out what might be wrong and they said it might be the brake booster which is leaking, though I don't have any brake fluid on the garage floor. Anyone have any ideas. I am trying to save some money up to fix this and want to know how much of a kick in the b@))$ it will be when I get there. Thanks.

Brake boosters aren't too difficult to remove, other then getting at the the brake pedal connections up under the dash...things can be cramped up under there.

The basic procedure is to remove the master cylinder, remove the vacuum hose, disconnect the brake pedal, then remove the booster. Watch out for any electrical connections that may have to be disconnected, and anything between the firewall and the booster.

STeveW,

Just so you know, a brake booster is vacuum powered. There is no brake fluid in the brake booster. The brake fluid is in the master cylinder.

Man, I thought I was the only poor sap who had to work nights and was up at this hour.

Thanks TOM, that clears some things up. There is definitely an air leak. It sounds like you are squishing an accordian style rubber boot when you press on my brakes. An air leak would definitely do it.

Do you know how much the dealer should charge me to fix this or should it be covered somehow.

Thanks guys.

The brake booster is a very common issue. Because it is so common I had to wait 2.5 months for a Ford brake booster. Just had it installed at work 3 weeks ago.

Ford calls it D99 back order. They say it is "the motherload of backorders."
