Alittle before my time, but I have seen several clips of him. He's probably one of the best hitters of all time as far as making contact with the ball and be able to run it out. Last I heard he was in critical condition.

wow. alot of young people here. I'm 25 and I got to see him play alot and throught for his size he hit the hell outta the ball and was lighting fast. sad loss.

Sorry to hear that. I think he had some stuff wrong though, his behavior got real erratic after he retired from baseball.

JohnnyO, there were allegations of domestic assault, though apparently not enough for anything to ever come of it. And there was an allegation of an assault in a restaurant that was determined to not have enough credibility for anything to happen to him. Other than those, the things that happened after baseball were primarily things that happened TO him, such as going blind in one eye from glaucoma, rather than things he did.

But of the things he did, you won't find a much better public citizen than Kirby, in any walk of life. He was always the first one in line to help out with any charitable cause. He raised tons of money to fund doctors to go to Africa to perform life-saving surgeries on hundreds of children there. (A local newscaster tonight was telling how he got to meet one of the girls whose life was saved by such surgery. She only knew four words of English when she met the newscaster, that she had learned only because she wanted to pass along a message--they were "Thank You Kirby Puckett".) His pool tournament was a huge draw among sports celebrities throughout the midwest, and raised thousands for charities. It's stories like these that are all over the airwaves today in the Twin Cities, remembering Puck.

Im a canadian so I was never into watching MLB as a child until Minnesota made it to the world series in the 90's, thats when i became a fan, and mainly because of characters and players like puckett. He went before his time and i can personally thank him for opening my eyes to the US national past time.

Heard a story today where a batboy at spring training a few years ago was complaining he was broke so Kirby signed 20 balls and said, "Here, sell these on eBay and make some $$."

Not many give away their signature/autographs these days.

Bill V....

I don't disagree, what I'm saying is that I think something happened and Kirby wasn't himself any more. Possibly a series of small, undetected strokes that affected him prior to the fatal one. Sorry to see him pass, he was one of the good guys in a sport populated by a lot of jerks.
