Has anyone ever had a bent rim repaired?

Were do you suggest getting it done and is it cheaper to try and by a used one?

Thanks Jason

Steel or aluminum???

Steel, if it is just the outer lip I have fixed many for others.

Aluminum, most of the times they break unless it is being done with a press. Even then it is a difficult job.

Steel is going 40 to 50 right now. Aluminum are going 60 to 70 by comparison...

Cheaper to buy a used rim, There are places, One here locally, but they get $125 to fix. Since they have to heat it and such, they can damage the clear coat and have to re coat..

Its the OEM 16" 5 star rim for an 01 4x4 ST. So to answer the steel or aluminum question my best guess is steel.

I hit a rock in a ditch and it seems to have bent the rim enough that it casues the rim to whobble. I had it rebalanced and placed in the rear but you can still feel the vibration at higher speeds.

My olny fret about going used is that i'll get another crappy rim when I may be able to pay the same pirce to get mine fixed.

Maybe discount tire?

Jason

I had two rims that whobbled like that on my Jetta, I took them in and I think it was around 100 bucks to get both of them done. They even popped the tires back on and balanced them. The car didn't vibrate after that anymore. I put on about 30,000 miles with the fixed rims with no probs. (I sold it at that point because I got my first ST)

It sounds like your not sure what you have. Hope this will help...

From your description it is the bottom rim. If so, it is aluminum...

I just did a search and they can be bought for 50 to 55 in good condition, (plus freight) with a gurentee to be straight.

The 16" stock wheel is aluminum. Steel wheels only came on the '01 job 1's and maybe a few oddball job 2's and they were 15".

if you still run factory wheels just get a used one. but if you got some expensive like 20's or something try the bowling pin method. Which is take a bowling pin and put it on the bend and smack the top of the pin with like a 2 pound sledge hammer. It works i have done my rims like that a few times from hitting a railroad track and some big pot holes.
