I looking for opinions on remote start/ alarm systems. I want to get one installed before winter...don't want the baby getting in a cold car. So any help is appreciated. I prefer to have it installed at circuit city (for the Lifetime guantee) or some other car electronics store.

Thanks

I have the viper and I am very happy with it, Just get a third key made FIRST and code it to the truck before you install the system... You will need an extra key to use or a bypass kit installed..

I also have the viper, it's a great system. I've never had any trouble with it. It works from a LONG distance too.

I have the Autopage RS-650Plus, alarm system, keyless remote, and remote start. Has worked flawlessly for me. Had it since two weeks after getting Trac. I think retail is about $350 plus install.

And Todd Z is right. The remote starts for the Fords require a coded third key. Be sure to get a spare- don't just use that second key!

Raser, Dave, The ST has a computer chip in each key. THE remote start can not start the truck if a key is not present... This is the anti theft system... There are bypass kits, BUT the ones that are flawless are the ones where you insert a key into a box under the dash, when you remote start the truck it reads the key under the dash and allows the truck to start...

SO get a new key form a sponsor here, or Ebay, Have it cut to the truck... Then go through the program steps to program it to the trucks anti theft system (real easy). Then give that key to the installers of the remote start...

Clear as mud???

What kind of a distance will the remote start work from.

I drive 5 days a week to the airport. Once I land I have about a 10 minute walk to my Trac. If there are no real obstructions in the way how far do you think it will go???

Let me get this straight. The installer has to put a switch under the dash with a key to start the truck in it? Will it be accessable? So if I lose a key I would be able to start the truck with this "spare" key? Sorry so complicated. I'm just thinking if I can start it so can somebody else. Raserx:huh:

To answer your questions, yes the installer will have to put a little black box that "reads" your key's chip, not the key itself (as in the indentions). It will be accessible if... you take off the 9 bolts that hold on the plastic underlay and the metal piece underneath your steering column... all-in-all about a six minute task. So... IF your alarm is disabled and you have those six minutes or so to loosen and take off the plates to gain access to it, then yes, the key can be used as a spare. Oh, and you have to undo the four screws that hold the key box together. But still.... yes.

However, if you have an alarm on your Trac, then I wouldn't worry about it. If someone will continue to attempt to unscrew nine separate hex screws of two different sizes, and four screws with your alarm sounding, then good luck to em. I suppose if they really had that drive and no one cared to say anything to him then he might be able to.

BUTTTTT... the key doesn't have to be under your dash. You can relocate it to any part of your Trac... of course, you will have to do the relocating, but if that makes you feel safer about it, then I'd suggest doing that. I think it would probably be about 12 wires you would have to splice into though.

I know my keypad will work from about 200 yards. I'm unsure of what the quoted distance is.
