Since last Sat. morning I have not been able to connect to our DSL at home. I called AT&T/Yahoo tech supt. (in the Philapenes again) and they ran a test on the incomming line. They said that the incomming line was bad, gave me a trouble ticket no. So now I am waiting for them to come out and physically check the incomming line. So for now I have to go out of the house either to my daughters, where I am now, or use the notebook when I can. :(:blink:

Internet addict? Wonder if there's meetings for that? j/k Good luck getting that fixed.

Another reason I hate DSL, had nothing but major problems with it...

I loved that we had Verizon DSL but the telephone line on the pole was some on else's, they did nothing but argue whose problem it was....

I solved it for them by getting cable...

I had trouble with DSL dropping my connection. When it worked it worked fast but would easily loose the connection and I would have to use the Windows connection repair feature. I am now on cable and it rarely goes down.

Remember, With ATT-Yahoo Dsl you get a dial up too.

you have to have the right numbers or use the Dial-up manager software.

then you can dialup from home and use it when you travel.

Hope it gets fixed fast.

Verizon almost got canned from our jobsite when they cancelled our first order for two DSL lines without telling us, then kept giving us a new date for hooking it up, then couldn't give us a date for hookup. We started the process to get cable instead when I got an e-mail that said the DSL was finally active. We HAD to get the customer's DSL hooked up, and we could wait for ours, so of course they hooked ours up, and can't tell us when they'll get the customer's DSL active! And they also hooked the DSL up on the wrong line, so we got to do a little rewiring. So I hooked the customer's network to our trailer with a 100' cat5 cable, and now they are active. I just hope they don't notice we are all on the same DSL account until the other line gets hooked up!

The Verizon guy who called with a survey about hooking us up got an earful for a good 15 minutes. He apologized profusely, but he's not the guy that needed to apologize. We'll definitely look closely at our other options when we have to hook up another jobsite!

Sorry about the rant. I feel much better now.

I was in a similar situation a few months ago. I had AT&T DSL for about 5 years or so and then all of a sudden my connection became very intermittent and slow. In the beginning, the phone techs tried to blame my PC setup (not likely, as I setup this kind of stuff in my job).

When they finally sent a tech out, he discovered that the connection board (in the phone box outside) was soldered very poorly. I guess the tech that installed my DSL initially did not do a good job. Once he swapped the board out and re-soldered, everything was fine. Make sure you have the person let you know the speed you should be getting on the connection (so you can compare to what tiered speed you are paying for).

When all is fixed, make sure you are getting what you are paying for by testing your connection speed at sites like this:

There seems to be an ability/pecking order in IT:

There are those that are independent contractors and they are pretty good at what they do...

...those that can't hack that work for consulting companies...

...those that can't hack that work in large IT organizations for big companies...

...those that can't hack that work for the cable companies...

...those that can't hack that work for the telcos.

(There I am sure I have offended plenty of people now...;))

After spending 6 months fighting with Verizon to get the ISDN line working properly in my house (DSL and Cable were not available when I started this) I finally got so aggravated I canceled my phone service with them as well as the ISDN. Cable became available and it was awesome! We didn't have a lot of people on our trunk so we never had speed issues. now I've moved and back to DSL since cable wasn't available yet. our connection drops constantly which is really infuriating since we have vonage and I always get cut off in the middle of a conversation. It's like having a friggin wireless phone sometimes!

Yikes... Makes me thankful I haven't had to pay a Highspeed internet bill in 2 years... Always nice to have the extra money in the pocket......

2 years ago I cancelled my account and they never shut off.... and I am still going strong! There are days it slows down or stops working... But normally its back up and working acouple hours later.... Who am I to complain about Free Internet... When they figure out and disconnect me... I will subscribe again.

Cheers
