Some cars, like Ferraris, are worth big bucks from the day theyre born. Others, like classic muscle cars, always have a following but attain collectible status only later in life. But some truly special cars are total busts when theyre new but go on, decades later, to find their place in the hearts of car collectors, especially those with a sense of humor.

McKeel Hagerty, president of Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in covering collectible cars, cites these examples as among his favorites in the flop-to-tops category.

I remember someone have one of the amphicars when i was growing up. I never saw it on the water, but saw it around town, with its' little propeller below the bumper.

I can't believe that the 1970 Plymouth Superbird isn't on that list!

They used to sit on the lot of the car dealers for two to three years brand new! They were put into production for the sole purpose of having a car for NASCAR. After the car was banned from NASCAR for being too fast! The car had only been produced for one year, and production ended too abruptly for this jewl. Now seeing one of these go for $400,000 is to no surprise to most car collectors.

Funny, I was just surfing eBay for a '67-'68 Coupe DeVille or '71 LTD yesterday.

Actually I won a '71 LTD on eBay a few years ago but had to back out after I found out it had been in storage for ten years (the ad didn't say that) and shipping it cost too much. I'd take a Nash Metropolitan too.
