Trying to find a Colt Government Pocketlit. Prefer something new or unused or modified.

I have a permit, but not FFL. I would have to find someone local to secure it for me. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

jj, there are several Pocketlites for sale on gunbroker.com.

If you are just looking for a carry 380, I highly recommend a Bersa or Firestorm 380. Will cost you half as much as the Colt, and are extremely dependable.

Agree!

The Bersa 380 is a great 380 for the price (it beats paying the price for a PPK). I shoot the Bers a lot and it has never given me a problem. And when I say a lot, I mean... A LOT :p

Nothing like shooting 2,000 rounds of 7.62x39 and .223 bullets for the weekend :D

Thanks for your help. Sorry I couldn't respond sooner.

Rich - dual purpose - not only for carry, but also for police combat competition. I am kind of set on the colt right now. I'll check out the gunbroker.com, thanks.

Mud Flap - I started out thinking I was going to get the PPK. Then I read comparisions to a number of other .380's. The Colt gov came out on top, not only for accuracy, but also for less recoil. I kinda really, really like accuracy and also less recoil, easy on my wrist.:) Another Colt pocketlite was in the running in the comparision, but I can't remember what it was called.

jj, I've had a German manufacture PPKS since 1968. Never had a jam in all that time. Maybe a couple of thousand rounds. Reliability is important. With a reworked spring, the double action can be made light AND reliable.

Mike,

I understand that you are very luckly. As I understand it, the PPK Walther models were outlawed for import here some time ago. I believe S&W picked up on the manufacture in the States at some later point. I seen a couple of PPK's in an indoor shooting range, both were gold plated and went for about $1500. apeice and really nice looking. I agree that relibility is extreamly important especially in self defense, but I have not heard of any problems with the Colt either.

The comparision that I read which was done by professional trainers, showed the colt pocketlites were the best of the 5 or 6 .380's tested which included the PPK. However, it did not say whether the PPK tested was a Walther or S&W. I think I remember that it was the less recoil that put both colts above the PPK. I think a number of factors were taken into account in this test: relibility, recoil, accuracy.

Mud Flap,

Noticed that you are fairly close by, where do you shoot. At what range, unfamiliar with any in Clearwater. I am in Land O lakes, I go to the Dade City Rod and Gun club, at least I used to.

I am still a member.

Me - Don't know, but I noticed the a lot of ranges have been closed do to building and complaints. I used to go to Odessa before it was closed, also one outside Ocala before it closed. The Dade City range is outdoor with 25, 50 and 100 yard ranges. They used to have a airgun field target range that I was involved with, but they had to close that because an apartment complex was built in the same direction that we were shooting prior to them building.

What about the "Silver Dollar Gun and Golf Club", I think thats what its called. Right outside of Oldsmar. I believe it is on "Lutz Lake Fern Road" or "Gunn Highway" or something like that.

jj, I mispoke, or rather miswrote. I have a PPK/S which has the same overall length, but carries one more in the clip. It is a tad taller with handle length. When the iPPK mports were band in 1968 based on dimensional size restrictions, the PPK/S took its place. Inter-arms international became there U.S. importer. The recoil is not bad at all on a PPK/S but again most of recoil is a function of frame weight and bullet energy.

Since 10MM S&Ws or officer model 1911 45's don't seem at all unpleasant to me, I really can't complain on recoil. if you like recoil, try a Dessert Eagle 50mm Action Express. a fun gun to shoot, but very impractical unless the bad guys are wearing body armor.

Mike,

PPK/S, ummm that's one I haven't look into either. Recoil, Mike the idea was that I didn't like recoil, that 50mm sounds like it would fly out of my hands.

I was also looking at anything small with a built in comp. to help reduce felt recoil.

edit: added the word "felt".

jj-

I am currently living in Winter Park/ Orlando.

But when I shoot I either go to a range in Vero Beach (about 30 min. from my home where I lived) or I go to our parent's mountain in North Carolina.

I found a link but I don't see on the website any mention of pistol or rifle range. I have been to this place a couple times to watch competition and it is very fun.

jj, is this for personal carry? If so, I would put more concern into reliability, ability to safely carry with one in the chamber. In a life and death situation, the first shot is going to be the most important. In most shootings, only 2 or 3 shots are actually fired.

If it is for home safety, i would consider a less penetration bullet selection, especially if you have additional family in the house. sheet rock is NOT a good bullet stopper. Copper jacketed bullets do not expand as well as an all lead bullet can.
