How can you transfer information and files from one computer to an new one? I can't put the info onto a cd and it is way too much stuff for floppys. Can I hook up a USB cable between the computers?? help!

Using Nelson's method is one of the easiest and most affordable.

Option 2: Pay about 15 dollars and you can upload everything to a remote site that holds you info. Then boor up the new computer and download the info. Many sites do this. They are mainly used for backing up your computer.

Option 3: Buy an extern hard drive, transfer the data via USB. Hook it up to the new computer and load it up..

Why not swap hard drives?

- or-

Place the existing hard drive in the new computer as the "slave".

copy the required data from the slave to the master(new hard drive).

The just reinstall the old hard drive back in the old computer.

Get two beers give one to me and let's go wax the ST.:D

If they are both Windows systems you can connect them. The Help function tells you how to network two CPU's. It can be a bit frustrating setting it up but you will have to do it yourself.

Thanks all. I don't want to risk installing the other hard drive as I suspect it has a virus or two. The new computer has Norton so it should pick up anything when I transfer data.

Ron, the old computer does not have a burner, the new one does.

wish me luck

I have a little USB flash memory stick that I use for rehabs and xfers. Mine holds 1GB and they're pretty cheap now if you find a good rebate. Might be something you could borrow if you ask around.

On my computer there is a "Detto Migration" icon. It is supposed to help you connect another computer to it and transfer data. I never opened it to see if it walks you through it but I know most things I've needed help with on windows xp it will walk me through it.;)

I've been using a downloadable (not free, but cheap) program called Link Maven to transfer files between my laptop and my desktop PC. It transfers the files via the parallel port -- not fast, but better than nothing. <A HREF="http://www.briggsoft.com/lmaven.htm">http://www.briggsoft.com/lmaven.htm</A>
