OK. I'm trying to get my laptop to hook up to my wireless router. 2 other laptops already hooked up to this router. Problem is I encrypted the router and no idea what the code is!! Running XP on a Dell Laptop. Any computer guru's out there who can give me some direction?

Mike,

You should not have to reset your router. You should be able to start your Internet Explorer and type in the IP address of your router, such as 192.168.0.1 Most routers will then display a logon screen asking for your User-ID, and Password. That should expose you to all the existing configuration settings including the WEP key.

If you do not recall the UserID and Password that you used on your Router, you will not be able to access the router unless you do a hard reset which usually involves pressing a "Reset" button, and rebooting the router. Most routers do not reset the configuration settings simply because they were unplugged or the power was removed.

Mike,

Can you access the router interface (a web page) from your other laptops' browsers? If you can, you might not have to reset it.

If you didn't change the default IP address, you can enter 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1 into the browser address bar to access the interface. And if you didn't change the default login userID/password, it could be something like blank/admin (where the UserID is left blank, the password is admin), or admin/admin. BTW, if you misplaced your router's manual, you can usually find it online at the manufacturer's website. The manual will have what the default settings are, including the default IP address and login.

Mine alows you to log in via the desktop that is connected to it via cat 5 without the key, just type in the user id and pwd. Then you can see what the code is for the wireless.

Cruzwdgt,

Not everyone has a desktop attached to their network and you can attach to the router from any PC by simply typing the router IP address and entering the UserID and Password.

That is not what Mike's problem is. He said did not remember the security key. But simply logging on to the router with the UserID and Password will reveal all the router configuration settings including the existing WEP key and he will have no problems connecting to the secure network with any PC.
