Hey everyone! I'm Bud's son, and I'm uploading a picture I got earlier today in Canton. He doesn't have an SD card reader, so I'm uploading it for him. I'm going to try HTML, but I don't know if it will work. We'll see.

RaceTrac, Sheetz, Wawa, (etc) are large, regional mega-convenience store chains that have put the little guys out of business by doing things better. Cheaper gas, better coffee, cheaper and better snacks, etc.

That's what I am seeing. Often those that can't compete cry foul...but it's more sour grapes than anything.

isn't it supposed to be track? I don't think its corporate greed, I think its lack of education!

And how is a Shell a family business?

Edit - Saw the above post after posting this. Understand now.

I like RaceTrac and Quiktrip stores.

We just thought it was funny seeing this on the store.

I used to go to this store ocassionally, they had nice employees

clean store Americans worked there, not any foreigners, not that there is anything

wrong with indians or pakistanis, most are very nice hard working families.

The RaceTrac just opened up down the street a couple of months ago.

So, why is this bad? From what I read, they donate a lot to local communities, support local teams, and probably hire more employees, and maybe even pay more, than the local mom and pop operations.

Im not all for corporate America. But, if the mom and pop cannot compete against the 'megastores', then perhaps they need to adapt. Also, I still don't see where Shell can be considered family owned.

If it was a small convience store with a few pumps, then I would believe its mom and pop. After all, they don't have to sell, and if they are renting, you can't blame the mom and pop realtor for wanting to sell for a higher profit.

Never used racetrack myself. I have had freinds and family complain about performance problems..

My dad sooted up a set of new plugs in his marquis after a fill up. In Livingston, Tx. My uncle had to change his fuel filter the same week after a fill up. Same station.

My wife's best friend's father owned several gas stations around where I live, most of them right on the interstate exits (we have 5). He started working as a janitor years ago at one of the smaller stations and eventually managed to buy it from the owner when he retired, and thus began building his "empire". About 2 years ago he sold them all to Kangaroo for millions from what I understand. I don't know the exact amount, but he told my wife's friend that neither she, nor her kids ever had to worry about anything financially. I believe all of his stations were Exxon or Sprint stations. The thing is, just because it says Shell or Exxon, that's simply the brand of gas they sell. The station itself is often owned by an individual or family, and several of his stations were fairly large. One of them had a McDonald's co-located in the building, and another had a Subway.

I would like to see where their prices were when the price gauging took place when gas prices spiked within the last few years.

If they were one of the first to $3 (like a Shell near me was) then no sympathy because they did not care about their community and the people.

If they kept it reasonable, then I feel bad for them but then have to question if it was a management problem.

from my experience, i use racetrack in florida. great prices, clean & very good c-store.

like everything else, look at walmart.

more for your $, convenience, clean, & everything you need at one stop.

welcome to the new trend in america. like it or not

This shell station had fair prices on gas when it went up to 4 bucks plus.

It's hard to compete with the RaceTracs and Quiktrips because they really are

customer focused. The local Chevron in town has been kicking the other three stations

butts, one closed down another local station quick selling gas and only does oil changes

and hand car washes, two older brothers own this one. been there for years.

It's all about customer service, Danny the owner knows how to treat customers,

he's foreign, not sure where from, but he is very personable.

I have a friend who owns 3 convenience store-gas stations. Have purchased my gas there for over 15 years regardless of price. 10 cents a gallon on a 20 gallon fillup is 2.00 and to me its worth that to keep a friend and good community contributor in business.

Just my opinion, but if more people had done this years ago, a lot of local people would still have good jobs.

The politicians that run this country can't seem to get it thru their heads , that the only way our economy is ever going to straighten out , is if we start making, and selling the things that we use every day, right here in this country.

Corporate greed has put us into this mess and crooked politicians have allowed it to happen.

Sorry for the long rant, but I and probably a lot of you , have just about had all we can take.

How exactly is this corporate greed?

If a family-run business runs for decades without competition and consistently makes high profits and its owners lead a rich lifestyle is that also "greed?"

When did building a better mouse trap and making a profit become bad things in this country?

Don't know the history of Quiktrip or RaceTrac, could thay have started as a mom and pop operation and expanded to national chain of retailers? Didn't most if not all comapnies start this way? I agree with you TJR, but when you carry this over to Wal-Mart, people get really uptight...watch...this thread will turn into a Union vs nonunion thread...
