The cruise on my truck is rarely working. I replaced the fuse, but that didn't help. I'm pretty certain that I need to replace the switch.

This appears to be the same as what I have right now:

http://www.amazon.com/Motorcraft-SW5928-Cruise-Control-Switch/dp/B000C5DUN2/ref=au_pf_pfg_s?ie=UTF8&Model=Explorer%20Sport%20Trac|2814&n=15684181&s=automotive&Make=Ford|54&Year=2005|2005&newCar=1&carId=006

but Amazon is telling me that is the wrong switch and I should buy this one instead:

I'm thinking that this is just a fluke error in Amazon's system and I should order the first one. Anyone else replace the switch on an 05? Which switch did you use?

Try this first. It worked on several of my SportTracs. Go the the brake master cylinder and remove the cruise control switch at the front of the master cylinder. It has the wire plug in it.

Once you remove it, tap the brake lightly to force a little brake fluid and maybe an air bubble out. Reinstall and it might just work again!

It worked for me.

My cruise control isn't working either. I will try the trick above from Steve and let you guys know. I have also heard that this brake switch fails quite often. Is there any way to bypass it so you can confirm it is the problem or any way to check the switch for proper operation?

If you have a VOM. Set it on the ohm scale. Disconect the wire from the swicth on master cylinder. Touch one probe to ground on mastercylinder. The other to the switch terminal. You should have continuity. Have someone mash the brake, it should break continuity.

Also set the meter to a 12vdc setting. one probe on the wire the other to ground. You should have 12vdc.

Interesting. I'm going to go give that a shot right now and see what happens.

EDIT:

So I tried the brake master cylinder thing and it appeared to work at first, but then it went back to the same symptoms as before. Sometimes the cruise works perfectly, other times (most of the time) I will hit the button and the light will flash once as I hit the button and then turn off again immediately. If I keep hitting the button, it will eventually catch, but eventually could be anywhere from the 3rd time I hit the "Set" button to the 300th time I hit that button. At this point, I'm still thinking the switch is the issue. I went ahead and ordered the first switch I listed above and I'll see if that will fix my cruise.

If the master cylinder switch checks. Most likely the steering wheel switch. Other members have had to replace theirs. The one on my moms grand marqius is touch and go at times. It is tricky cause in '01 ford didnt put an ingaged indicator light on the dash.
