After almost two decades of effort to reduce vehicle emissions, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will retire its last diesel bus Wednesday and become the only major transit agency in the nation with a fleet that is totally equipped with alternative-fuel technologies.

Diesel isn't quite dead, but I can't think of a more fitting place to get rid of it. The last vestiges of illegal conspiracy between GM and Standard Oil to replace clean and efficient electric streetcars with polluting, fuel guzzling Diesel buses deserves to die.

I don't see rails and catenary wires making a comeback on urban streets. Stand-alone bus designs have become good enough to make it through a full work day without external help. It's a great time to take our city buses to the next level.

IMO, Diesel will out live all fuel types. Just because LA, Commiefornia finally got rid of their last diesel bus, does not mean the rest of the world will follow suit.

Most of the world has more diesels than petrol on the road. Many of these vehicles don't sound or even smell like a diesel and they got power.

While in Germany, we had a VW Transporter to haul our equipment around. That little 5 cylinder TDI could smoke the tires in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. Top speed was around 100 MPH (160 KM/hr), but I was driving an ugly minivan, so I wouldn't expect it to go that fast. You see Mercedes running up the Autobahn at over 140 to 150 MPH buring oil.

The fear of diesel is unfounded. The diesel engines of today are not the same as the 60s and 70s.

Yes. Trains. Buses have proven to be a spectacular failure. Who would rather have a bus line over a set train line?

No smart business owner will build in an area where customer influx is predicated upon on-road transit. A reason why much of Baltimore stagnates.

I first thought you were talking about:

The North Carolina ABC Commission is ending the distribution of 190-proof grain alcohol, including Diesel and Everclear, in state-run stores on Dec. 1, 2010.

Not for me though. I did have a auto painter years ago that couldn't paint a barn until he had about a half bottle of Diesel. Then he could lay on a really slick job.

Killed when he ran his pickup off the road and into a tree at high speed ..............DUI. :banghead: :smack::smack: Don't think he had many brain cells left after all that Diesel....
