I found a great shop that can do a 6" suspension lift for my 2wd ST. But they say I need new wheels because the new spindels are too big for my factory wheels. Is this really true or are they just looking to sell something? I called a couple stores around the Tampa area and they said they "think" my factory wheels should work just fine and I shouldn't need new wheels. I would like to hear what you all think. Thanks!!

I think if you go that tall you would want wider rims any way beceause you going to put on bigger and wider tires ??

Big tires on those skinny rims will not look good...

Also if the suspension components have harsh angels on them you may need a taller rim ....

a six inch lift, like Todd said, would look terrible with the stock wheels. i have a tt/sl body lift combo, i kept the stock wheels put 33's on them, but got wheel spacers for the front and rear. i have 1.5" in the front and 2" in the rear. makes it look much better and will help with your turns. if you keep the stock wheels you will rub the inside of your fenders in the front and the rear.

The guy at the shop said that if I get 16x8 wheels I should do just fine. He also said I could easily run 315/75/16 with the 6" suspension lift and that NITTO makes a great tire. What do you all think?

I personally like Nitto tires.....

So are you using your stock rims or getting 16x8 aftermarkets?

The 6" suspension lift that they do is pretty cool but cost $1,800. They put new front brakes on including lines, front end alignment when the lift is installed and then one again at the 500 mile checkup. The guy at the shop said NITTO tires last about 40k miles and are very sticky. He quoted me four 315/75/16 NITTO ALL TERRAIN tires for $600 and four new 16x8 American Alloy wheels for $400. Everyone at other shops say thats pretty good pricing.

what 6inch lift are they installing on your 2wd?

and if its a spindle lift, it should fit your stock rims, its just not going to look right, being as they are a 7inch wide rim, and need to sit out more for a better stance...

Id be curious to see how they are getting a 6inch lift...

If you go with bigger rims you must go with bigger brakes too.

No, you mustn't. Larger braking surface area is never a must. It is desirable to increase, or maintain braking performance if the mass of the wheel assembly is increased.

Edit:

To answer your question: If the new spindles are in fact large enough to not fit in your current rims, than yes, you need new rims. Actually, they don't have to be new - they can be used, but a larger diameter and potentially a different width and or backspace.

I've never heard of spindle size being different, or for that matter affecting the wheel size. That said, for any tire that will look right with a 6" lift, the stock 16x7 rims are going to be too narrow. Need an 8" or 10" wide rim.

SportTracKid '03,

I have the Nitto's on my 07 I love them will not ever put anything else on...mine r 31.5 would love to lift my 07 and slap 33's on but can not lift a 07...but oh well I wish you the best with that...plse post pics when you get it done...

Why can you not lift an 07? Can you do a tt/shackle lift on it?

Where have you been? You can't do a shackle lift on it because it is independent rear suspension. Also, the axle shafts run through holes in the frame. Do a search for 07 and you will see all the posts that discuss this issue
