Are there shops that have some sort of way to test the drive shaft for balance while on the vehicle? Are there any tell tale signs as a driver that the drive shaft is out of balance and not a wheel issue. Or does the drive shaft have to be removed and taken to a specialist shop?

Not that I know of, All the places I deal with, need it out of the truck...

But on your 4x2 all you need is a 12 point wrench and 5 min of time to take it out....

Same here.

If you have access to another set of wheels, you can install them temporarily to rule-out the current wheels.
