I just crawled under my truck and with my two hands attempted to rotate the driveshaft. It has about 1/4" of play. I think I've read it's not supposed to move but not sure if 1/4" of rotation is still within this limit. Please advise...

Is it just in the shaft or in both the gears of the tranny and the rear differential???

If it is everything moving and it is only 1/4 INCH of play, you are fine.

You would have to physically measure the play.

ALSO you need to find if the play is in the cardan joint, OR int he tranny or rearend it self..

Once you figure that out, you need to test the part that has the play and see if it is within specs..

Well, I grasped the large cylinder and rotated that and I saw play at the tranny end and towards the differential, but just along the shaft's rotational axis, if that makes any sense. The shaft doesn't slop around otherwise. I will check it out again and pay attention to the u-joint. Thanks folks.
