I painted my new drywall with drywall sealer/primer. It looks great!

Now, I had half our ceiling redone so that the texture matched the texture of the old finished ceiling. So it's new joint compound on older, painted ceiling.

Do I need to use drywall sealer/primer on that aswell?

Wouldn't hurt.

One of the benefits of the drywall primer/sealer is that it truly does seal the joint compound and without it your painted joints can tend to get dull, almost ashy looking, over time especially if using a darker top color.

For a ceiling that you are probably going to paint white or offwhite, what I describe is less of an issue. However, you might blend and match the other ceiling areas better if you sealed, assuming those other areas were also sealed. Probably worth painting the entire ceiling, of course, not just the 1/2 redone.

Good luck.

Prime/seal the whole thing. You'll be sorry if you don't. Tip: Have the primer tinted/colored the same as the top coat, and you'll have a whole lot easier time of getting good coverage- maybe even with one coat of the top coat!
