The engine has started missing at 3000 rpm, the Trac drives fine around town but at 3000 rpm starts missing and will not go any higher

Any ideas ??

ExST Gen1 V6~4.0L~SOHC; which year 2001~2005?
Suspect MAFSensor, TPSensor, IACValve, DPFESensor, EGRValve\Controller,... maybe a vacuum leak.
I'd give all above a good cleaning
& inspect all vacuum hoses+fittings for cracks\leaks.
Do one thing at a time, then test drive 'til you've found cause.
Do you have a CheckEngineLit? Have you scanned for OBD2 TroubleCodes?
How old are Plugs+Wires+CoilPack?
Could also be a failing FuelPump. How old is FuelFilter?
Any other recent maintenance work or part changes?

If it happens in neutral or park it's a rev limiter to prevent you from grenading your engine.

Did you scan for trouble codes?

For years I have been trying to figure out why my 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT does that while in park rev over 2000 it would start shaking but while driving no problems . Where would the limiter be located . Would like to know for knowledge reference .
Thank you swshawaii.

The limiter is built not the EEC so “it” can not be removed like the old carburetor days. You can get a programmer and change it.
