Hey everyone... Just had a brain storm.. has anyone ever done an engine swap in the 1st gen ST's? I'm talking along the lines of a 4.6. It shoul dbe rather easy, no?

The earlier Explorer 5.0 will go in our Gen 1's. It would be tough though to ge the F.I. to work but with some workit can be done. I believe a T-5 tranny would work??

Nate, As dingo said the 4.6L is too wide for the engine bay. The old 302ci pushrod motor 5.0L was used in a few years of the Explorer and Mountanier. With the simularities to gen 1 tracs, it can be done, with some work. I wont be plug and play, though. It is a good strong motor with the 40P heads and the Gt-40 inspired intake. It has alot of potential, with all the aftermarket parts out there and still be emissions legal, in most states.

A 4.6L will fit, although you might need a body lift to make it fit.

A stock 6-cylinder transmission will not work on the 5.0, I'd recommend a C4.

EFI is difficult, but it depends on state laws and your budget on how difficult it is. You could run a stand-alone engine computer (like what hot rods use), but that'd make your CEL useless, which is needed to pass state inspections. Standalone is much easier to do as it requires only minimal hookup to the chassis wiring.

Even a 5.0 is not a direct, weekend swap. To me, it wouldn't be difficult, but to some, it'd be near impossible.

The 4.6L has been installed in Rangers, whose engine bay is no bigger then the Trac's. Although I'm pretty sure it was installed in a body lifted truck. I wouldn't go with a 4.6, but it can physically fit.

A 460 would not even come close to fitting, but like you said, it would be easier than a 4.6. People do not realize how wide a 4.6L engine really is.

I never realized it until I read an article in FF & MM mag where a guy put a 4.6L Cobra eninge in a 1969 Mach I that originally came with a 428 CJ engine. The work involved to install the 4.6L would have been better spent on a nicely built big block.

For a little 281 C.I engine the 4.6 is very wide.
