Back in 87, I needed a "cheap" car for transportation back and forth to work....So, I decided to purchase a Yugo. :)

In 87, this was the first year they came out here in the states and there were two models...with or without A/C

$3500 without A/C

$5000 with A/C

I decided with the heat in Texas, you have to have A/C......

Anyway, this little car with a 4 banger and manual trans could really get up and go. I drove this car for about three years and put 97 K on it before trading it in on a Ford Escort.

Being a Yugo, the dealership had no idea what they would give me as a trade-in since they never got one before. As it turned out, they ended up giving me $5000 trade-in since some guy came in to purchase a used car and wanted my Yugo.

With the gas prices the way they are now, I wish I would have hung onto it since I was getting about 42 mpg and never had any maint prob's with it.

I haven't seen one on the street since '97....

More history about this car can be found here....

A guy my dad worked with drove a Yugo because of the price. He lived about 75 miles from the plant. On average, he would put 200,000 miles on them before trading it in after a few years.

They rusted like crazy, but ran good.

My brother bought a new one around 1988 or so. I think it was a GX model that required 89 octane!

It felt pretty much like a rolling sardine can / death trap, but it did run out nicely. I remember it eating timing belts and exhaust systems. Not too many years after new, the rust seemed to overwhelm it over night.

Nice and cheap though. Unlike the new SMART car arriving in the US now.

At today's prices, a full tank of gas would be about 10pct of the original purchase price :)

Trading it with a full tank of gas could double the value.

A guy that lived behind me in IL had one.... he drove it until the wheels fell off :) with no issues other than rust.

My mother purchased one brand new with A/C in the mid 80's. Still to this day my mom comments that was the best car she ever bought and she wishes she still had it. My mom drove the thing like all ladies do, nice and smooth and never over the limit. When I drove, it was like I was trying to make it self destruct. That car never gave my mother one bit of trouble what-so-ever. Even with me beating on it. My mom ended up selling the car to my older brothers friend and he totaled it one week after purchase. The color was called 'Grabber Blue'. My mom purchased it without a stereo and speakers because I convinced her I could install one myself. We went to Kmart and bought a kickass Kraco system. LOL

Mine never gave me any trouble as well, just changed the oil and rotated the tires and hate to admit it, but it was the best car I ever owned up until now with the ST as far as not having any issues with it.

I never saw any rust issues with it....probably because of living in Texas away from sea water, etc.

Don't see them any more up here in the salt belt. They all rusted away, along with Vegas and Aerostars.

Although I always thought a Pro Street Yugo, tubbed with a blown Buick V6 and a license plate that said "PRO YUGO" would have the advantage of funk.

I haven't seen one of those in years, but a cousin of them still lives in Europe...The Fiat 129P

First car I ever financed on my own, purchased in June 1989. Paid $2600 new without a/c. I drove that car like a bat out of hell. I had a real problem with camshafts on that car for some reason, even threatened the 'Lemon Law' on the dealership. Found out it was a lubrication problem so they put in another engine and everything was fine. Put 68,000 miles on that car in 4 years and traded it on an Escort in 1993. Funny story about that car. While I was in Japan my dad kept it at his house. They had a really bad winter the first year I was gone. One morning my dad woke up and went to start his car and cracked the block, did the same to my step-mom's car. Went to start the Yupo and it turned over on the first crank. They drove it for 2 weeks until they could get their engines fixed. Loved that little car. If I could have gotten parts for it (clutch was out when I traded it in and still got $1,000) I would probably still be driving it. I seen one here in Sumter, SC about 5 months ago. I turned around to follow the guy and talk to him but lost him in a subdivision.

My brother wanted to take two Yugo's and make it into one a streached version. Like a Yugo Limo.

I've only seen a few, and none in the last four or five years.

The only thing I've ever heard about them is it's nice to get the rear window defroster

(that way, your hands stay warm while your pushing them in the winter when they won't

start)!!!

I've seen them in California in the last ten years, but not since then. In fact, there was a lowered one on base that had kick ass rims. Seeing a yugo low rider made my day, heck, it made it worth being there at all! :)
