I have seen people in Atlanta get away from cops. I also have a friend that got away from one while we were in college. How?, you may ask.
Motorcycles.
More than once, I've seen cops flip their lights on motorcycles and the bike just takes off. I assume the cop realized the futility of a chase if they didn't get their license plate, flipped off their lights and slowed back down to traffic speed. Either that, or they did actually get their plates. I imagine if they didn't, though, they would have either completely gotten away or splattered themselves all over the highway.
My roommate in college also got away from cops on his CBR1000RR. With that kind of acceleration and handling, it isn't hard. I tore into him for sure, though. Idiots ruin things for everyone. I can't believe how easy and cheap it is to get bikes that fast.
