once again ford dropped 6.8% in monthly sales. gm increased 9.6% in may as toyota gained 14% to outsell #2 u.s. automaker ford. honda,nissan,daimler-chrysler also advanced. toyota which overtook gm to lead the world in sales during the years 1st quarter is expected to gain u.s. market shares again.

what is your opinion on what ford should do get them back into the race ?

Do some MAJOR redesigning of their whole line of vehicles. Focus on better dealership/customer relations... it's not that their vehicles are terrible, it's just the fact that people want a reallllly good service provider when they need work done under warrenty.

My opinion.

I guess I've been lucky that the three different dealerships I've taken my Trac to, honored necessary work under warranty and took good care of me. My only complaints with them would be their pricey parts department and service, but so long as they're good to me I don't mind giving them some of my money.

As for vehicle features, I especially like the modular look of current interiors, but fit and finish could be a lot better. I also have a thing for storage nooks and I think Ford interiors skimp on this. I'm talkin standard dual glove compartments and a nook along the center stack big enough for a pack of cigarettes, a cell phone, or whatever mini electronic device.

Center consoles should have, standard, two cup holders, an open compartment for items the size of glasses and wallets, and a retracting trash bin at the bottom of the center stack. All these storage spaces I think add a lot to value. I was disappointed to see that the new Edge was sorta lacking in this area. On the plus side, Ford has been very good at putting spacious center armrest storage, and cup holders and pockets on all door panels.

As for engines, I think this is where Ford is seriously lagging behind the competition. At least they put out the 3.5L 260hp Duratec, but the Focus and Escape need a small 235hp V6 that would give 20mpg city and four-banger options with increased power as well. Mid-size SUVs/SUTs should get torquey 275hp V6s, then push the V8s to the 330hp mark.

As for the vehicle line-up, I actually like how each one looks. The new Escape, Expedition, and upcoming Focus look very good (but all three still need competitive engines). I especially like the neat lighting features on the Escape and the new Focus. Also, I'm betting the upcoming Flex will be a hit, but Ford needs to bring the Interceptor concept into production. A new 2-door SUV would be a hit too, a la Bronco. Again, a powerful, upsized Ranger needs to happen already.

That's all I can think of for now. Goodluck Ford and Mr. Mullaly.

IMO, Ford needs to fire all of their designers. The last time they tried to clone all vehicles, the sales went down.

Ford is turning around. They are succeeding at what they are doing. It will take time to bring them back to profitability and when it does, I will be well off.

Get rid of the sales jerks at the dealerships.

People would buy more new cars more often if they didn't have to deal with the sales idiots at the dealerships.

Overhaul the car every 4 or 5 years like their successful competitors do instead of just letting every car die on the vine.

ford ranger. pretty much never updated for what ?? 20 years

taurus, updated in 1995, everyone hated that design, so what did they do? kept it until they got rid of the taurus last year. at one point the taurus was the number 1 selling car in the country, but they never updated it much until everyone bought something more current.

mustang, they finally updated it in 04, after what? 20 years.

explorer, another number one selling vehicle that then never did a thorough overhaul until what? 2 years ago?

I guess we should consider the sport trac fortunate, they updated it after only what? 7 or 8 years?

escort, they kept that same basic design at least 10 years.

Contor, came out in 1995, another car they kept around 11 years until they had til kill it and replace it with something new.

expedition, I am not sure how long it has been around, but it pretty much is the same as in 1996. since then toyota has come out with the sequoia, nissan the titan, and chevy has updated the suburban.

just look, the companies that continuously improve their products, succeed. the ones that let them die on the vine, suffer the same fate.

the mustang is the only bright light here, but I am sure they will decide not to redesign it until toyota builds something similar and passes them in sales with that as well.

they only seem to lay off the people that build them, never the people making the decision to keep a design the same in hopes that more people will want it next year even if nobody wants it this year.

I love my sport trac, there is not a nother car in its class save maybe the nissan frontier or GMC colorado, neither of which do anything special for me.

but the rest of fords lineup leaves something to be desired, except for the mustang.

hopefully they will get things turned around, I am done ranting.

First model was 2001. Last model, before the redesign, was 2005. According to my math, that is 4 years, 5 years if you call each model year a year.

axel, very good point but you are not on the same page as caymen, so your thoughts are all wrong. he also corrected your math homework as well

Axel,

I am not saying you are wrong in your thinking like Gary would like you to think I am. The fact is, Ford redesigned the Sport Trac like they should have, but they have still ignored the Ranger. The redesigned Taurus was a flop, yet Ford continued to build it. They ignored it and let other car makers get their way into the garage of loyal Ford owners.

Along with the Mustang the F-150 is doing relatively well also. A coworker was renting one and I sat in it for a while and started to fall in love with the contemporary interior and the spacious cabin.

1) Build cars people want to buy - it varies person to person, but the business they are in requires them to understand what customers want to buy. It is a very rare occasion where a car remains popular (sells well) without change roughly every three years. If they didn't buy a particular look/design after three years, they're probably not going to.

2) Re-invent the buying experience. The vast majority of people hate to go to dealers and negotiate prices. It's an adversarial relationship between the buyer and seller and that turns buyers off. I would think creating a win-win relationship would be a milestone in auto buying. Making a concerted effort to change that, and making it clear to the buying public that the buying experience will be better at a Ford dealer would help. Why not build the car online, fill out the paperwork, and then just go pick it up? The dealer could be a place to view the cars, test drive and pick up the car. It's becoming an internet world, why not lead the way and take advantage of what customers are becoming familiar with?

3) Gain customer confidence in build and design quality - I think they are trying here, but it will take time.

4) Gain customer confidence in service integrity. Convince customers they won't be screwed by the service department and that they'll perform quality work and it will help sway people. While there are good dealers out there, there is a lot of room for improvement out there.

oops... ignore this post

I wasnt really complaining much about the sport trac, sorry about not being clear on the ST model years. I was living overseas from 1998-august 2006 so I am not that familiar with the cars during that time period.

F150 another example, I agree it is a damm nice truck but again, it was the number one vehicle forever, then they redesigned it in 1994 or 1995 I believe, and they have stood by as toyota has gained on them.

I love the new mustang, and I hope everyone else does because if history is any indicator, they wont change it for a long time.

that being said, the sport trac is my first american car, first V8 first automatic and first truck of any sort, up until now I have driven either european or japanese cars. I am totaly satisfied with my sport trac, I just wish I had ordered leather.

when Donald Peterson left Ford in 1989, they were in pretty good shape, profitable, the model lineup was fresh, the 4.6L v8 was just introduced on the town car. the taurus was still one of the top selling cars, so was the F150, the explorer was just comming out and about to become one of the hottest selling SUVs. They were good at getting a lead, but they seem to stand still and let themselves get beat. Sorry, I wish it were different but that is how I see it. I purposfully did not mention Lincoln and mercury because the story is pretty much the same there. The crown vic, basicly the same car as from ??? early 80s maybe? People say that is a boring car for old people, well if you never update it, of course it is. but a big V8 rear wheel drive can be successful if executed well, look at the chrysler hemi 300 for example.

anyhow, there is nothing like losing billions of dollars to bring about change. shame it has to come to that though.

Ford's problem is Ford Management. When Ford bought out Fiat it turned it to a large fiasco of a loss. Ford couldn't make it work at all. A few years after getting rid of Fiat, Fiat is now has enough assets to buy out FORD in total. If Fiat can make its vehicles profitable, why couldn't Ford. After all the sales product was the same in both cases. Repeat, Fiat has enough assets to buy out Ford after only a few years after being dumped!

PRM had a very good post,

one reason I was able to buy my ST is that I ordered it while I was still overseas, I never set foot in a dealership. if I had, I probably never would have bought it. I ordered mine in august and it was to be delivered in october, when I got state side in early september, I went to a dealership just too see one, the sales people are horrible, they no nothing about the truck, all they wanted to talk about was 2.9%, they would not stop hovering around me even when I told them I am not here to buy.

service, well so far I have limited experience with the service departments, but I did try several times to book an appointment online, I recieved an email telling me someone would call to confirm, I have never heard back. I ended up just doing it myself.

I am just hoping toyota or someone buys them so they can teach them how to treat people right.

I think their cars are pretty good right now, but they have been so bad for so long, people dont even think about them. Hate to be so negative, everyone who sees my trac loves it.

Holy Sh!t!!!! Amen. Toyota is no different. I am buying a new Toyota and 85% of salesmen I have dealt with S U C K. I am almost to the verge of going with a different automotive company... it's that bad.

Repeat after me folks:

"I promise that when buying my next car I will ONLY go to the dealer for a test drive. All financing and pricing will be researched and obtained prior, and all my negotiations will be done over the phone or through email. I will only return to the dealer to sign paperwork once we have agreed to a price, and I will NEVER pay over invoice...at least not more than $100 over."

If you do all that, you pretty much make the saleperson moot...they can suck as much as a Hoover and who cares!
