FORGOTTEN NATIONAL TRAGEDY: BILL CLINTON AND 1,000 DEATHS IN THE "CHICAGO HEAT WAVE" OF 1995

Hillary Clinton has called for a "Katrina Commission." How come she never called for a commission to investigate why at least 1,000 Americans died in a 1995 heat wave when her husband was president?

The "Chicago heat wave" killed more people than Hurricane Andrew, TWA Flight 800, the Oklahoma City bombing and the Northridge, CA earthquake, combined...

That is because it would have looked bad for her husband and now she is gearing up for a run at getting back to "the House". This is another good way to get back into the minds of voters so she can say "look what I did".;)

Gavin,

Less we forget that in 1995 she was the First Lady, not Senator Clinton. Also, she probably did not plan on running for the Senate in Illinois so there was no need for an investigating committee.

But your point is well taken. That was a forgotten incident, and perhaps someone should remind her of that heat wave in 1995 and see if she would be interested in having a commission look into that feasco! She will probably claim it was a Republican plot against her husband!

Once again, gaps in the government protecting its citizens. You would think since NOAA estimates normal heat related deaths at 175 per year, when it got up to, let's say, 250, some bells would have sounded.

However there are many cities that now provide cooling centers, and frequently televised warnings when the heat becomes an emergency, so at least they did something about it.

Sad fact here is that many were elderly, and many elderly don't have anyone that pay attention to them, or kids that care about them, or just anyone period. Some are very stubborn, and like with Katrina, refuse to leave home.

Then there's the idiots that want to keep working out in the heat (I mean excercise), and the shitbag bosses that keep their employees burning in the heat (THIS SHOULD BE AN OSHA THING ALSO... I wonder if they ever made any requirements)

I wouldn't say forgotten, but since it happened over a course of 2 weeks, the impact was more spread out. Concentrated mass death in the same day creates media blitzes which hammer it into the public's mind. When something goes on for 2 weeks,

Chicago experienced its worst weather-related disaster, with 465 heat-related deaths recorded during the period from July 11-27, 1995. Milwaukee was also severely affected, with 85 heat- related deaths recorded during the same time period...

Despite accurate National Weather Service warnings and advisories and effective media coverage, the report concludes people either did not receive or know how to use the information. Both Chicago and Milwaukee had extensive disaster preparedness plans for other weather events like floods or blizzards. However, due to the highly rare nature of the heat wave, neither city possessed an official plan for responding to heat emergencies.

The report recommends that the NWS focus preparedness efforts towards people who are most vulnerable to the dangers of heat. Among the most susceptible are the isolated elderly living in urban areas. This is because cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee have many urban dwellings constructed of materials such as brick that may trap hot, humid air at dangerous levels.

The report also recommends that emergency response organizations at the federal, state and local levels recognize severe heat waves as potential natural disasters, and that areas at risk should be prompted to develop emergency response plans for severe heat waves.

I dunno, I guess I just feel that in 2005, if landlords must provide heat, they should need to provide AC as well. Forget about broadband for everyone, anyone can get access to a computer if they need to. Get a grandma an AC. How about rent control / improved housing for americans / building regulations / improvements for disaster prone areas?

OK. I do agree that a landlord should provide AC if they rent out an apartment.

The real question is, who is going to pay the electric bill?

With that being said, since it was hot, should there have been a mandatory evacuation for those in the Chicago to Alaska? Should FEMA be equiped with giant AC's to cool people. Should have everyone been instructed to walk into Lake Michigan to cool off?

Katrina was a storm that everyone knew was dangerous. Amtrack "dead headed" trains out of the area. They offered to move people, they were told to go without loading anyone. The airlines moved thier planes out of the NO area without passengers. They could have been loaded up with people that might be alive today.

What should have been done to prevent those people in the "Chicago heat Wave" to survive?

Tom

Jeeezzzz here we go again. Katrina was Bush's admin's fault and now a heat wave is going to be the Clinton Admin's fault. Where does stupid retoric end guys? We worked this summer with several weeks on the production floor with temp's well in excess of 115, a coupple of employees had heat stress problems and yet we got through it. Who's fault was that? No the company cant AC the work space because it is an area with several 150' long tunnel kilns running and they dont make an AC unit that could make a dent in the temps. AC is a luxuary, people just need to lern to manage themselvs better in climate situations like this. The poor cant even afford to heat a home hardly yet now we talk about giveing everyone AC, I dont think the power companys could handle the extra demand if everyone had AC in their homes and ran them all durring the summer. I personaly dont care for bush and I do feel that all levels of Govt. from local, state and fed didnt respond as efficiantly as hoped but I dont seriously think it's problems rest solely on one man's shoulders. Just rember this no matter how pleased or dissapointed you may be with the man in the house (whom ever it may be at that time) or our govt and it's querks it is the best. Millions of souls all around would love to switch with you or have an oppurtunity to come here. As ol Georgie said last night we will get through this and be greater and stronger after. I dont agree with him much but I honestly fell he is on the mark with this. It is our nature as americans to take an adverse situiation and make ourselvs better from it..

I think the whole point of this the origin of this thread was simply to point out the fact that in the last five years Liberals/Socialist Democrats and their cohorts in the major media have used every opportunity, including disasters and tragedies to attempt to politicize them and smear/blame President Bush.

In the current situation, Katrina had barely left the Gulf region and Liberals/Socialist Democrats were already blaming the President for the damage, deaths, and calling for commissions and investigations. So far, the death count in New Orleans hasn't come anywhere near the over 700 deaths during the '95 heat wave. And the majority of those were also poor or elderly in Chicago. But did we see Mayor Daley or the IL Governor whining and crying to the media about the lack of help or slow response from the Federal gov't? Did we see other prominent figures (such as media whores Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, or celebrities such as Kanye West or Celine Dion) spewing their crap about President Clinton and the Federal gov't not responding because the heat wave only affected black and/or poor people? Did CNN file a First Amendment lawsuit to be allowed to film the dead bodies in Chicago?* The answer to all of these is a resounding NO.

I'm not happy about how President Bush has performed in some aspects of his Presidency, but it's unbelievable how there is such an overwhelming hatred of him amongst the Liberal Elite, Socialist Democrats, and the Liberal Media Elite. They have no tact or taste, and will politicize anything, even a tragedy such as Katrina, to try to burn him.

*LTGEN Honore won't allow the media to accompany recovery crews on searches for casualties out of respect for the dead and their families.

Let's see. We want rent control, AC. The government should supply food, shelter, transportation and a job. What is the individual's responsibility? This is not a welfare state. Don't get me wrong, when tragedy strikes the government should give a helping hand. This doesn't mean that they (actually we) pick up the whole tab. We are 50 united states, not one big state. You can want state rights on one hand and a federal one on the other. Werther you a Democrat , Republic or an independent. politicians do what politicians do....try and get the next round of votes. That's why we are turning into a welfare state in my opinion. A prime example is the recent transportation bill which has enough pork in it (both sides of the isle) to down right make you wonder.

My I didnt relize this is a recent development within the last 5 yrs. Smear, slander, and other associated mud slinging has been going on sence the begining of our country. Our founding fathers were so bad about it they would publish papers and use pen names to distance them selves from the blame for starting the finger pointing. Ben Fanklin was a master of it publishing more negitive press than many agenst his oposeing view fellow politicians. The Burr- Hamilton is a clasic and unfortunate example of the mudsling. But most importantly it shows that sour grapes have always resulted in name calling and the blame game. It is funny to me how Consertive people of the Republican party love to use the term "Liberals/Socialist Democrats " as a catch all slander. I chose to treat people like this like the children they emulate so well and ignore these idioic comments. Have a wonderfull day:)

Yeah, right Andy. The Democrats have done all they can to smear Bush, but the Republicans did nothing (and continue to do nothing) to smear either of the Clintons.

Get real.

Hey being president is a tough job. Thank goodness Bush found a little time for R&R.

First of all, I'm well aware that mud slinging has occured throughout our country's history. At no point did I state that it had only begun within the last five years. I was simply pointing out that major media outlets (such as the network news, NY Times, Washington Post, Time, etc.) have pounced on anything they can to try to sensationalize it into a much bigger issue than it may be to try to nail President Bush or others labeled as "conservative" or Republican. Hell, the media even tried to dig into the adoption records of Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee John Roberts. Tell me what the heck that had to do with his qualifcations for the Supreme Court??? Again I ask, did they make a huge issue out of the '95 heat wave and how it was the Federal gov't fault? How much have you heard about the "Able Danger" report? Not a whole lot. How about the fact that Jamie Gorelick (former assistant AG under Clinton) was a member of the 9-11 commission, yet she was responsible for the policy that blocked communication between the various Federal intelligence/law agencies, and this very policy was something pointed out in the 9/11 report. She should have never been on that commission to begin with, and nowhere in the mainstream media did anyone make a bigh deal of this. And celebrity elites jump right on the bandwagon with them to get some free face time in front of the cameras.

I never said anything about being conservative or a member of the Republican party, yet that catch-all label was applied to me. I guess that wasn't childish, because my comments were idiotic!:p As for my use of the term "Liberals/Socialist Democrats", if the shoe fits... The web address www.democrat.com takes you right to a forum titled "Democratic & Liberal left political chat & politics". The web address www.democrat.org links you right to MoveOn.Org, a huge liberal left-wing organization. The Democratic Party (on a national scale) of today in no way resembles the pre-Great Society Democratic Party of JFK, Truman, Henry (Scoop) Jackson, or Zell Miller. Where once the DNC was a champion of state's rights, today it espouses bigger Federal gov't, a cradle-to-grave mentality through gov't hand-outs and entiltlement programs, and tax and spend fiscal policy. All of these are Socialist concepts right out of Karl Mark's writings, so you can't tell me that the Democratic Party hasn't moved much more towards the left.

And as far as prominent Liberal/Democrat figures bad-mouthing the President or other non-Liberals/Democrats, I already mentioned Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Prominent Democrat Party leaders such as Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean, Chuck Schumer, Charlie Rangel seem to relish in complaining about what the current administration has done wrong, and doing so in a vile, vicious manner instead of offering ways to work together towards a solution. How about IL Senator "Dick" Durbin's (D) comments on Senate floor comparing Abu Gharib to Nazi death camps, and those of us in the military to Nazis? Did the media lambast him for that? Nope. You heard a little about it, but nowhere near the backlash there would've been if he didn't have a "(D)" after his name. On 4 September, LA Senator Mary Landrieu (D) said on ABC's "This Week"

"If one person criticizes them or says one more thing, including the president of the United States, he will hear from me," she said on the ABC's "This Week." "One more word about it after<

Got it in an email yesterday and about fell over laughing. Heck, I voted for the guy but I think even GB himself would laugh if he saw it. Especially after all the media hype we've been accosted with. I for one am damn tired of hearing about New Orleans. Other places received as much if not more damage then NO but you never hear anything about them. NO is only getting attention because the media loves to exploit our nations ignorant poor people and attack Bush.

The heat wave came from global warming, it's all Bush's fault.

The larger issue I think is that over their eight years the Clinton administration lowered the bar so far on so much, that when the Dems and their cohorts in the media complain about something in the current administration, it's become real easy (too easy in fact) to point out something they did that was worse. For the Dems, it's a problem now.

If the last election hadn't been so close, I'd have voted Libertarian.

Thanks, JohnnyO. You just reminded me of another example. On 29 August, RFK jr.(yet another prominent extremely Liberal Democrat) posted a column to Huffington Post.com blaming President Bush for not singing the Kyoto Protocol (supposedly on the advice of now Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour), thus causing more "global warming", which caused Katrina to develop into a Cat 5 hurricane and wipe out the Gulf Coast. So see, it is the President's fault.

Here's something funny:

It seems someone has hijacked Google. Go to www.google.com and do a search on the word "failure". The number one result is President Bush's biography on the White House web site.

Number two is Michael Moore's web site.

Hey, at least it's fair and balanced!:D

Hey, I wish y'all would keep political opinions out of this web site. I visit the site to keep up with issues related to the Sport Trac. I'm sure there are plenty of other sites pandering to

political ravings.
