Last weekend, I bought two new iPod Touch 32gb models for my wife and I. When we tried to use them in our vehicles (my '04 STA and her '08 Mustang), I found that the cables I had for them weren't compatible with the iPod Touch/iPhone. Seems that Apple changed the pin configuration or something on the 30-pin USB slot on the iPods sometime between my 5th gen iPod Video and the current models so that the cables I'd been using wouldn't charge the iPod Touch models. So... I began a search for a new adapter that would work in both our vehicles. I'm running an in-line FM adapter to my OEM Adrenalin head unit, and Allyssa's Mustang has an Aux jack and 12VDC port in the center console.

A quick search on the web led me to the Kensington LiquidAUX for iPhone and Ipod. It plugs into a 12V port and has an audio cable coming out of the plug that goes to the Aux jack on the vehicle. The other end just plugs into the iPod. This is perfect, because it not only charges the iPod, but provides the level audio from the USB instead of headphone jack audio. So it was a simple plug and play for the Mustang, and I already had a 3.5mm female-to-RCA splitter that would connect this to the FM modulator in my Trac.

This retails for ~$60, but I found them on eBay for about $24. I ordered two, and to thank me for my business, the seller threw in a third one! So I got three of them for $46! This was really cool, 'cause it provided a third one for the RV. They arrived yesterday, and they work great! Oh, and they also come with a remote control that straps to the steering wheel that provides basic play functions.

So if anyone's looking for something to connect to the Aux port (non-Sync) in a Gen 2 ST console, this fits the bill. Also works great with an in-line FM modulator in a Gen 1 ST with OEM stereo. Here's a picture, and a link to it on the Kensington web site.

They also make a "Deluxe" model that has a holder for the iPod/iPhone.

They're all over eBay pretty cheap. Like I said, I found them for as low as ~$23/each.

Nice review,

+1 for Kensington brand. I have their Iphone charger and it works well and is well made.

For those seeking Iphone car chargers beware of the very inexpensive or off brand models as they're known to fry the Iphones...!!!

No worries with the Kensington model, gee I sound like a sales rep....I'm not though..!!

Just so you know, the pinout wasn't changed on the newer iPods, the charge voltage was changed. PIE makes an adapter that plugs inline with your existing cables to convert the voltage to the needed level (5v to 12v), the CC-IPD. If you have (like me), a CD Changer to Ipod adapter (frdn/pc-pod from pie), it goes inline between the pod and the cable, and converts as needed. A bit pricy (about 27 on ebay when you can find them), but does work. Should also work for OEM in-car ipod plugs that don't do the newer ipods...

Here's one that's up now:

What are your thoughts on the iTouch? I would like to get some kind of portable internet device, but work pays for my cell phone, so I don't need a phone. Have been thinking that the iTouch might work for me.

Thanks,

Rocks

MTU,

I'm replying with it now. It detects and connects to wireless networks pretty well. However, I'm still getting used to the touch screen. Lots of fun/cool apps for it too. I've only had it for six days, so that's all I can report so far. Otherwise, I'm still learning this thing.
