Unless you have another, usually major, problem with your front brakes, such as worn pads
not replaced before the rivets eat into the rotor, or a sticking caliper, causing excessive
heat to warp the rotors, they should last for the life of the vehicle. Of course, nowadays,
the manufacturers have been putting sub-standard rotors on their vehicles just to try to
get them out of warranty before they go bad, usually warped in this case. This could have
been what the dealer was referring to in a roundabout way, without actually admitting it.
Since you are out of warranty, I would suggest pricing a good set of Bendix rotors and
check on installing them yourself, or having someone you can trust install them for you.
I have an '89 S-15 Jimmy with 242,000 miles with the original front rotors, but I bought it new
and have maintained it regularly, and the rotors obviously had better/thicker metal in
them for them to last this long. I have had three Chevy Cavaliers (only God knows why!)
since 2002, and of all three, the longest I got out of a set of rotors was 15-18,000 miles.
Dealer refused to replace ANY of them, even under warranty!
I guess we can all just chalk this one up to Global Economics!
