Do you have the tool to do the job?

If not, I recommend buying the metal tool. The plastic ones just don't seem to do the job on our Tracs for some reason.

Plastic tools suck. Metal. If you are unable to find one, let me know. I can pick up a set and mail them to you.

What is the special tool for? Nevermind I just looked at the project that shows how it is done.

Ahhhh, yes young grass-hopper....

It is a in-line filter. However, the way it is retained into the line requires a special tool to remove it. There are no clamps per say.

It is a spring steel type retainer. There are little fingers that hold against the ridge of the filter. The fingers must be lifted up off the filter to allow the filter to slide out of the hose.

Here is a sample of the filter.

And here is a picture of the tool on a line...

What you can't see is where the filter slips into the plastic line. The tool slips over the line and into the fitting. As is slides into the fitting the spring steel finger lift up. You can then pull the filter off the line.

Clear as mud????

Joycie, yes, they should have it.... These things can be tricky, If you have never done one, I would recommend doing research first.. IF you damage the spring fingers in the clip you will be replacing the entire fuel lines in the truck..

what i allways do is remove the black retaining clip, spray some cleaner in the connection.. Then push the line and the clip together, this will help unload the fingers,, while holding the clip end insert the tool and push the line and the tool and the clip together. then while holding the tool in the clip, pull back on the line, it should separate... ALSO there will be a lot of fuel pressure in the line unless you remove the fuel pump fuse and run the truck till it runs out of gas.. ( 5 seconds or so)... to re install you simply push the filter into the clip..

Thats really the best i can describe it...

Maybe some one else has another way of doing it..

If anyone here is unable to find a tool to remove it, please let me know. I will pick a set up and send them to you. The last time I got them, they were like $7.00 for a complete set.

The picture I posted above is from a site that sells them. I recall reading the tool was like $6.48. They do make various sizes, ensure you get the size your after if you buy it from a site and have it shipped. You'd be better off to find it in a local store simply to prevent an issue of guessing the correct size.

Or, let Tom send his set he has as he knows they are correct...

The fuel filter looks very similiar to what Nissan used on my 280ZX. The big diffierence was the fuel filter was on the top and side of the engine... making it really easy to remove...it was cradled in a bracket with which allowed it to be loosen to be removed... in the 120,000 plus miles I replaced it several times over... about every 30,000 miles! Every once in a while the rubber hose would stick to the filter. I used a large pair of gas pump pliers to break the hose loose so I could replace the filter.....
