I've mentioned on threads here before, that I've become interested in the STA's. I didn't know they existed until one drove by me in traffic a couple of weeks ago. Well, that black Adrenalin, is owned by a worker at a facility I was at today. I left him a note on his windshield to call me and talk about his ownership experience.

Anyway, holy hell it looks huge compared to my little ole Gen 1 ST. Looks almost a big as an F-150 crew. Loved the look, just much bigger AND taller than my ST...granted mine is lowered and is currently sporting the stock wheels with winter tires on it.

anyway, bigger huh!

Not even close to the size of an F150 crew IMO. I could have gotten a great deal on an F150 crew back in '07 but the Gen 2 sport track was more my size.

Joe Mag, just bite the bullet & buy a Gen2 STA, you'll be glad you did! Pick your color & your options, you can't go wrong. Now finding one maybe a different story.

I think the gen 2 is about 5 inches longer than the 1st gen ST, and most of that is in a more roomy cab. the bed is the same length, but a little deeper. width is about the same, the 2nd gen is about 2 inches wider.

I considered a cc f150, but it wouldn't fit in my garage. The F150 cc is almost 2 feet longer than the gen 2 st, and 10 inches wider.

If I was to get an STA. It would be the gen2 V8. Much more custom body work than the gen1 STA. The gen 1 only had the chromed xlt wheels, chrome nerfs and 590watt stereo. Only the '04 and '05 had the painted panels like the xlt. '03 STA had the same body as the xls.

I drove my old mans 07 ST for a few days last week. My Gen 1 is definitely a lot higher(taller). Also "felt" like I was sitting lower in his.? Both stock.

I have owned both. A Gen 2 is a little lower and longer. Most of the extra length seems to be in the rear seat legroom area. My son is 6'3" so this is good. Gen 2's handle so much better that it isn't even funny. Downside, they are not as off-roady and have traction control instead of a limited-slip.

I never owned a Gen 1 but I did own a couple of Ranger Supercabs and the Gen 1 Sport Trac was built on the same chassis as the Ranger SC. The Gen 2 Sport Trac was built on a stretched Explorer frame and thus included the IRS and an improved front suspension design from the same gen Explorer.

While the Gen 1 could be considered more "off-roady", with the right tires a Gen 2 4x4 will hold its own on the trail. Besides, the fact is most 4x4s spend at least 95% of their time on-road. For winter and wet highway driving I prefer the 4x4 Auto (AWD) of the Gen 2 and if I do need to go off-road (I am a hunter) or muscle through deep snow I still have the additional choices of true 4x4 high or low range.

However, the biggest difference for me is the fact that the Gen 2 with the V-8 can tow over 6000 lbs and the fuel mileage is not much worse than my old Rangers with the 4.0L V-6. As a matter of fact, my 07 V-8 ST with the 6-speed auto gets better highway mileage than my 02 Ranger FX4 did with a 5-speed manual transmission and the FX4 couldn't tow a fart.
