When does a global economy threaten the security of a nation? I read all the time about how the import companies are good for America. Providing jobs, spending billions. Thats the small picture. I guess most forgot the history lesson about how the big 3 changed the maufacturing from vehicles to planes, tanks, jeeps to save America to defeat the Germans. My guess if....and its a BIG if we ever went to war with the East....the Japanese car companies wouldn't offer as much as a pair of gloves to help us out. God forbid the Asian chip makers stop supplying the chips needed to keep our fighters, i.e f22 Raptor, in the air. Heck I'll go further.....Say the Taliban was incoporated and broke into the car market......You'd see your neighbor sooner or later driving one. Call me old school. I'll stay with a true american company where ALL the profits go to Detroit! Go F and GM!!!!

Off the box now...

That scenario was true in the 40s, but may never be true again, given how wars are fought today. Don't we already have enough, modern war machines, in sufficient supply and surplus to fight any campaign that might come up?

The next great World War won't be fought like either of the last two, I suspect. I don't see huge land and sea, or even air battles. Mostly you will see what you have seen in the wars of the past two decades....the US bombing the crap out of infrastructure.

About the only truth with wars is that we have never accurately predicted what the next one will be. It's good to have options and the capability to overcome what you could not predict. Do I see us needing to do again what we did in WWII, no. Can I be certain we won't need a robust manufacturing capability at some point, no.

I'd like to know more about the true benefits of US companies vs Foreign owned companies building cars in the US. Obviously, in terms of overall benefits to the U.S., it's better to have a Honda built in Ohio than one built in Japan, but how is it different than a Ford built in Kentucky. There has to be a good study or book on this somewhere...

I could not agree more. Being someone that builds "Larger pressure vessels, which some are used in the defense industry" (the actual statement I am allowed to say) protecting the sources thaty manufacture the steel that is used to build the components we build is very important. The items we make are put into service for 25+ years and the company I work for warantees it for the life of that item. Everything we do is top secret. There are many "government employee's" lives at stake if we make a mistake. Mistakes are not allowed and if you make a big one, you are walked out of the plant and are looking for a new job. No if's, and's, or But's. 30 years from now, the FBI can come knocking on my door asking me questions about my job performance. Nothing to take lightly. If the USA ever had a war on our own soil, I think we would be in a world of hurt and we would be "caught with our pants down".

I would like to find one too.
