For those that remember my post about buying a new Birel racing kart...

First day out in it, I separated a rib. Ouch. I was sore, but didn't know it was damaged. Ended up racing the following weekend, couldn't breathe. Come to find out it's separated, so I took a few weeks off. This past weekend, I raced out at Blue Max Kart Club in Davis in a 'crossover' race between Davis, Dixon, and Prairie City. Huge turnout, At least 120 karts of various classes showed up! We had 13 karts our TaG novice group.

I was doing OK in our first heat.... until the guy in the 96 kart & I touched his back tire with my front tire...

I'm told it was THE best kart krash in years!

I just spent 3 days at the UC Davis Med Center for 3 fractured ribs on the right side, (as opposed to the separated rib on the left side.) a fractured clavicle, and a collaped lung, which they re-inflated. And a large portion of my upper chest & neck are black & blue... OUCH! I made it 47 yrs without breaking any bones.... until now. And this was my second time getting flipped in a kart! It was a big race, so there were photographers doing their thing, and depending on how you look at it, I was lucky enough to have one standing at the turn where this 'event' occured. He's got copyrighted stuff, so all I can post is the link to the site where the pics are at. I'm the guy in red in the 33x kart. Click on the right 'next' button to view them... There's about 10 of them... enjoy!

I got to ride in an ambulance... again... Although this time I remember it! lol

I haven't seen the kart yet, although I'm told it's tore up pretty good, though no frame or engine damage. So I'm hoping that Bill can mount a 'trucker's knob' on the steering wheel, because all I have is my left hand to steer with for this week's race at Prairie City. (just kidding.) I'm probably done for a FEW weeks at least... At least until I buy a new helmet to replace the Arai that I trashed.

Sorry to hear about the crash, Krash. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear you going through that. I dislocated a few ribs years back playing football. Didn't know I did it, all I know is that it hurt like hell. A couple weeks later I was at the gym and I sneezed. Neeldlees to say I went streight to the hospital. That's when I found out I had dislocated three ribs. The doc told me every time I sneezed, coughed, or anything like that to hold my right side up against a wall to ease the pain. Get better soon and good luck.

Putting everything into perspective, while I was in UC Davis Med Center's Trauma unit, I was next to a kid who was from the foothills who had come down to Sacramento for a prom party. Some kids 'crashed' the party, things got out of hand, a gun was pulled, and kids got shot. The kid next to me, Vince, got hit twice... Once in the chest, and once in the left leg. He ended up losing his left foot & lower leg. 2 other kids died in the incident. He's been in UCDMC for 3 months, 6 weeks in ICU, and 6 weeks in Trauma care. Here I was, in the hospital for 'self inflicted' injuries from which I'll recover in a couple of months. This poor kid has had his whole life changed due to the careless actions of some idiot with a gun.

I"ll be fine...

Yep, it doesn't take very much time spent in a hospital to realize things aren't so bad. I've been there too.

Man, that's so sad (incident with the innocent kid)......sorry to hear about your accident but glad to hear that you'll be okay.

For what it's worth, I was checking out the pictures and I noticed that you had your wheel turned to the left when you highsided on the left. Just in case you fid yourself in a similar situation again (and hopefully you won't) turn your wheel to the side that's on the ground and it should recover. Again, glad your okay and let us know when you're back in action with the kart.

OUCH!

I hope you heal quickly and completley.

Hope Ralph Nader doesn't see your photos-- I can foresee roll-over protection and side-curtain airbags legislation coming...

Nice pics, bad accident....great that you are going to be okay.

P.S. The one pic makes your rear tire look under-inflated, but I am sure they are supposed to be that way. Just taken at the right time I guess with highspeed, kinda like those pics of the baseball wrapping around the bat.

Dude, that's awesome. Well, not that you got hurt, obviously, but now you've got a great story. And no you can consider yourself a real race-kart driver.

Thanks for all the good wishes...

I just got back from Kartworld, and other than a bent steering arm, steering wheel, and smashed radiator, all the damage is cosmetic. Bill says he'll have it back together by tonight, so I can race on Sunday. :)

And the board of directors for Blue Max has voted unanimously to give me a free membership for the rest of this year AND all of 2008! See, all I gotta do is have a good wreck once a year, and I can race free for life! lol

As far as steering the kart, I had NO TIME! I came out of the corner, saw the kart next to me, and BAM! I was in the air! Instantly... I was on the ground, going 'Owww... I don't feel too hot right now...' I'm told I had a good run on the other kart, but he couldn't hold it down on the bottom of the track coming out of the turn, and drifted up into my line.

Now it's off to go helmet shopping!

Glad your okay Kerry! Did it you get it on video? I'm sure you could send it in to some tv show for extreme crashes lol.

Dude...

I JUST finished ordering a Bell online. Damn...

I bought a Dominator with extra shields. I'm JUST a bit too quick, I guess...

But I wanted to get a jump on it so that I can maybe get this one custom painted, because I'm not a big fan of plain white.

When I waste this one, I'll order the next one from ya!!! :)
