Hey all, I just figured out the fix for the ST 2001 Job1 problem with lean bank 1+2!!! I know a lot of the fixes were dealing with the cracked vacuum hose but this didn't apply for the 2001 Job1 vehicles... Well, I have been battling this problem for over a year! Let's start with the symptoms- I noticed a slight loss of power, Lean bank 1+2 code, Problems with start up when it sat for more than an hour, Brakes would grab and lock up the first few times they were engaged, the engine temperture gage read slightly below normal and even some codes of random misfires. I had gone through many of the easy stuff eliminating those fixes. I had even taken it to 2 ford dealers and about 3 other mechanics and they simply charged too much for an I don't know diagnosis-I swear I must have paid them a good $500!!
Well, one day recently, I was reading the handy Hanes manual reguarding the Temperture gauge being low and it pointed me to the Engine Coolant Temp(ECT)sensor . Well, upon reading further it also metioned the Engine temp sensor/switch. Which both are located side by side. So, I decided that I would change out those, and the termostat-since they are all close. But upon reading the Hanes on how to get to them it said to remove the upper intake manifold. So, I decided that the vehicle has 130000 Miles so might as well change the gaskets. Well, besides a couple of bolts tahet were a little tricky it wasn't too bad I'd say about 3 hours all together. Took it for a test and the ST runs like a charm! Talked to a mechanic and he helped me figure out the links to what was wrong and why they were fixed. Lets start with the temp guage- the sensor was bad. cold start/idle and stalling- bad switch- the reason, that talks to the computer and then the computer adjusts the fuel/air mixture, that is the reason for the lean bank codes. Loss of power-the intake manifold must have had a slight leak- I notice the peddal seems to react quicker. Also the idle was a little rough and so the manifold leak probably didn't help the computer calculate correctly. But the most interesting was the brakes... My buddy told me that one of the hoses I had to disconnect was a vacuum hose for the brake system and so when I fixed the gasket it fixed the brake issue. I never knew the brakes had vacuum system- I thought it was purely hydralic or something to that effect!(guess that's why I'm not a mechanic) But, I have driven it in Michigan weather for the last 4 days and about 300 Miles and no codes and it seems to be smoother, quicker and all around better than I ever remember it. I will continue to monitor it and post the results!
So if any of you 2001 Job1 ST owners are having the same issues I hope this helped out- I know I was frustrated and felt left out when everyone was fixing thire job2s and I had no advice. If any have questions I will help as much as I can! Hope this helps someone!
