Are you going up for Fleet WeeK? I went for Fleet Week while stationed aboard USS Wasp (LHD-1) back in '97. It was a blast. We had to go on liberty in uniform, but that worked to our advantage. All city buses & subways were free to military folks in uniform. Also got head of the line at tourist places like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, etc. There's usually free or discounted tickets to Broadway shows too. My wife came up for the weekend, and we got free tickets to see "Cats".

And pretty much everywhere we went I never had to pay for my own drinks. :haveabeer:

NYC loves military folks, and really rolls out the red carpet for Fleet Week. It's a great time!:supercool:

There are 1000's of places to eat and bars also. Also lots and lots to do and see. You should really look around on the internet and see what interests you.

Like TrainTrac said fleet week is great for all you military people, you deserve it!

Anyone visiting NYC from the South has GOT to have a meal at Lucky Cheng's... :D

Jackson Hole for a burger.

A real, Original Rays for a slice of pizza.

Chinatown for dim sum.

Little Italy for authentic Italian (Olive Garden it sure AIN'T).

If you want authentic revolutionary-war era food, eat at Fraunce's Tavern near the tip of Manhattan, and walking distance from Wall St, Battery Park, (see the link below). This tavern was frequented by George Washington and he supposedly addressed the commanders of his troops there. The beef wellington is to DIE FOR, when its on the menu.

We are out on the Island.... We make trips in for stores and shows.... TONS of places to eat and go and to do....

Where in the city will you be ?

don`t know yet. where ever they put us when we pull in.

You're going for Fleet Week, right? Upon what ship are you now stationed?

My guess is that they'll berth you near the Intrepid Museum. When I was on the Wasp, they put us right next to the Intrepid just off 49th Street in Manhattan.

hdt, regarding my previous recommendation--Be aware that I meant it somewhat tongue-in-cheek. If you do a google search, you'll see what Lucky Cheng's main theme is, and why I would say that.

Seriously, though, once you know what it is--if you're completely dead set or turned off by that idea, by all means, don't go. But if you're able to go in with an open mind, and simply have fun, the place is an absolute blast--regardless of your personal persuasion. I don't want you to go there based on my recommendation, but having no idea what it is, and then be upset that I recommended it. Know what it is first--then still go!

About 25 crew members from the USS Roosevelt will be in Dutchess County as honored guests on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, as a part of New York Citys annual Fleet Week. The sailors are scheduled to participate in the annual Hyde Park Memorial Day Parade and to attend Memorial Day ceremonies at the Hyde Park Town Hall and in the Rose Garden at the Roosevelt Historic site, as well as other activities planned to honor them.
