IF you coolant level is good, Test the coolant. I think you may need to flush your coolant, change the thermostat and have your radiator tested....

Could also be the fan clutch or a slipping belt...

Roger, what STCTC said.

As an ex-mechanic trust your instincts as to whether or not you really have an overheating problem. Sounds like your instinct tells you it isn't overheating. That leaves a faulty temp guage/thermostat. I suspect it's a cheap part and an easy install for an ex-mechanic. Start there and see where it leads.

Roger,

With that many miles, you need to change your thermostat, coolant, and Radiator cap. Being that you can reproduce the problem points away from being a temp sensor problem. Usually, when there is an electrical problem, it either works right or it doesn't. Since you can do something to make the light come on, It leds me to believe the problem is with the cooling system itself.

Time for a complete cooling system inspection and service:

Thermostat Replacement...

Cooling system flush and refill...

Inspection for weak or brittle hoses...

Overall system check for leaks...

Just as a man reaching 65 years old (I am an Ex-Old Paramedic!):

Thermostat can stick (Heart Valve):

Hoses can harden and plug up (Coronary Artery Disease):

Fan Clutch can start to fail (Metabolism?):

Water Pump can get weak ( Again, Heart?)

Just like you, if you're walking down the street at 25, all is fine, but if you get on a stair-

climber or treadmill at 65, all of the weak points start showing up!

I think these maintenance tips will solve your problems...
