The ambulance which carried JFK from AF1 to Bethesda and then to the Capitol was recently sold for $120k. See link below...

Makes you wonder--what other famous/infamous vehicles are out there? Which would you be most interested in having, or knowing the post-fame history of?

Examples which come to mind...

--The convertible JFK was actually shot in

--OJ's white Bronco

--Ted Kennedy's Chappaquidik (sp?) car

--etc...

Let's leave out the TV and movie vehicles for the moment--although that could be a thread in and of itself...

-The train car Abraham Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address in

-Any one of the cars owned by any one of the infamous mobsters

-James Dean's Porsche

There actually is some significant debate whether that is the vehicle. Documentation by the Kennedy museum shows that it was supposed to have been crushed after the military released it to the museum. Of course, whether the scrapper destroyed another Pontiac is like the second shooter theory--we may never really know.

Trivia:

James Dean's wrecked Porsche was bought by George Barris and put on tour to warn young people of the evils of fast driving. At some point in the early 60's it was stolen from the transport trailer and hasn't been seen since.

JFK's limo was painted black, a roof added, and was used by the White House to chauffeur VIP's around until about 1977.

Ronald Reagan's Town Car limo is also at the Henry Ford Museum. To this day it remains locked for security reasons and only the Secret Service has the keys. Museum staff just dusts off the outside. Makes you wonder what kind of high-tech defenses are in the O-man's Caddy.

Someone locally has a Bricklin that was originally purchased by Cher. I see it at cruises.

Someone around Pittsburgh owns Uncle Jesse's Ford truck from The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Dan Marino's old Chevelle SS convertible is owned by my uncle. He can prove it and I've driven it.

To nitpick, can anything in Ronald Reagan's towncar be considered high-tech defense?

Trivia I found a bit macabre at the General Patton museum is that the car which General Patton was fatally wounded was fixed up and used as the personal car for several other high ranking officers.

Pontiac??? If you're referring to the JFK limo, it was a Lincoln.

it was on the last night of barret-jack auction saturday.

before it went on the block, they did mention that there was some doubt about the authenticity of the vehicle. actually, a few years ago they rejected putting it up for auction because there was not enough proof that it was real. this time around they had numerous forms of "proof" as well as from the navy that it was authentic. they also claim that the owner did enough due dilengence done over the years to say it was the real deal.

i thought it would sell for more. to me, i think i would pass.
