Today I was cleaning out my gutters because the house is getting pressure washed/painted over the next week, and I came across this. I am suprised the coax was still working (that wire is for my internet, and I was getting 13 mbps with it like that). I called the cable co, as they were the ones that installed the wire and they said they would come and fix it, but it would be a couple of weeks. I went ahead and fixed it myself and ran it through the conduit that houses my HD antenna wire and a cat5 cable running to the downstairs. Whatever had been chewing did not seem interested in the conduit that was there. Anyways... At each corner of my house it looked pretty much the same. Something has been chewing it up, and in some cases even chewed some of the shingles off. I guess I need to fix that now too, but what I want to know is what is doing this, and how do I stop it?? It has to be squirrels or chip monks. As far as getting them to stop, now that is a tuff one.

There may be something they do not like the taste of that you can either spray on or paint on.

Even if you were to trap and relocate them more would come around. So i think it is a matter of finding something the don't like.

You could feed them another way for that matter, maybe if you leave corn for them to eat they will leave the cable alone????

I can't tell you how many of those chewed wires I have fixed over the past 35 years doing antenna work. Definitely squirrels. A little piece of lead works well, ( if placed right) !

I'm do finished carpenter work on the side. Have done siding and roofing before. The damage is bad, but I've seen worse. Any moron cable installer should know better. That will involve some major work but what you would need to do is remove the chewed up area first by cutting it out. Then see if you have attach any back boards (something you can screw into) for the new exterior wood. Use pressure treated or ceder. Bugs and some animals hate those kinds of woods. Use spray foam to cover in any cracks. Then side over it. But hire an exterminator to remove the beasties from your house. The gutter and some roofing materials will needed to be removed to make the repair. If your not comfortable doing yourself get a good siding/roofing guy to do the work. Sometimes a pest controll guy can refer you someone.

Use Decon or try to smoke the critter out. But I would recommend a pest guy.

If you leave corn or something (as said above), throw some of it on a daily basis on your neighbors roof for 2 weeks. Get them used to go on his roof. When you stop feeding them, they will still look on your neighbor's roof and find .... his cable!

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the poison first. My painter said he can fix this trim easily at no additional cost to me, so I'll get him to do it. Maybe I could put some chicken wire up on the inside to keep them out.
