How safe is it to drive with 4 outta the 5 studs and lugs on a rear wheel? Mine broke and i have to bring it to the shop thanks

I believe the strength of the remaining 4 studs would be sufficient for "most" driving conditions. Just keep your speed reasonable and try not to do any violent cornering maneuvers until you can get the missing stud replaced.

I drove my t-bird for a year with a missing stud and never had any problems. I just never realized how easy it was to fix (at least on a 92 t-bird)

The rim itself does not really ride on the studs. The axle shaft has a raised collar on it. The center of the rim fits this collar. The nuts on the stud keep the rim square to the axle shaft. So the load is really on the rim center, not the studs.

Your fine....

Replace it on your next brake job...

Heck, I found myself driving with ONE...REMAINING.

That's right. Kept hearing these pinging noises every hundred miles or so on this long trip.

Saw I had only one lug left on one wheel the next morning.

(oh, and the pinging noise, I think the snap and PING when each of the lugs I lost let loose).

LUCKY! (STUPID)

Won't that throw off the balance a bit ??

Yes it will, but since the stud is so close to the center of the rotating mass, it won't make as much of a difference as a missing wheel weight would.

You should be alright unless you are going to be in the next Nascar Truck Series

Race anytime soon. Just watch the cornering loads, especially if it is on the front,

and replace as soon as possible. Balance shouldn't be a problem, as the stud is

located next to the center mass of the rotational assembly. (O.K. I HAD to throw

that in there!).
