HVLP Paint Gun???

I need to paint a couple of small tractors, any advice on a decent, but not too expensive, HVLP spray gun? I'd probably spend $150-250 if I found something worthwhile. Bought a Sears a few years back and thought it was pretty close to junk-used it and gave it away...

Larry, your budget is pretty good for such a gun to paint with, IMO However, if you have a Harbor Freight store in your area it may be worth it to loook at the ones that they have in stock. There were about 5 different models there, with varying degrees of competence and functions, and from just under $20 up to $80. I hesitate to advise you to get one of those economical ones, but if you have a desire to give it a try you may be surprised at how good thye work. But with your budget being what it is, try a store that has body shop tools, like NAPA, they may have what you are looking for with a better quality. I was painting my mom's house so I didin't need anything fancy so I got one at the $40 range and it worked pretty good. Doing a paint job on a couple of tractors may call for something more upscale! Just thought I would GMO! Good Luck!

Larry,

Harbor Freignt has them at about half the price you quoted. If you are a professional painter they might not meet your needs for quality or industrial strength. But if you are just a home owner or hobbyist, they will likely give you many years of reliable service.

Binks or DeVilbiss (both are ITW) are the industry standard. You buy one of their guns and parts will be availbile for years so you will never have to buy another. How are you going to go ??? Siphon cup, gravity feed cup , or pressure pot ? I prefer gravity feed cup , it's less sensitive to problems due to not getting the paint thickness right. One thing i do know is the harbor freight guns are junk (you get what you pay for)...

Hi there Go on the web & research spray guns I think you will find a conventional gun is what you need,You need a lot of air for HVLP guns,a cheap HVLP gun is not going to be a real one but a compromise,A cheap conventional is most likely to work well

no a hvlp uses less air... HVPL uses normaly a max pressure of 30 psi. The only reason you want to use HVLP in a pratical sence is to reduce waste do to loss of transfer effecency. High pressure gun is a better investment for you as they are easer to use and you wont notice the small savings that comes with them as you an't running a production line. Hvlp also reduces emmisions some and in a paint booth there is a small reduction in the fogging of the surrounding air compared to convential guns. conventional guns are earer to opperate as there is more ability to adjust your air to meet your spraying style. I would go with this gun as it is an exclent model and at out facility has proven its self. 611109

Another good brand is Graco. Any of those three are good industry-standard guns (Graco, DeVillbis, Binks). I like Graco and Binds best.



However, I'm not sure you want an airless gun for spraying (non-industrial use). Airless is commonly used for painting houses, etc. and the paint does have to be clean and uniform velocity. Airless would not be used with syphon feed, gravity, or low-pressure pot, (these three along with HVLP may use air or not use air to get the paint to the tip, but they do all use air to atomize the paint and move it out of the gun). Airless runs pressures much higher and actually forces the paint out and atomizes it.



Several years ago I had the opportunity to use a Graco self-contained electrostatic gun and it was WILD to watch the paint fog wrap around the work and get sucked to it.
