Hard to be a Doctor without patients.

My original post addressed another delay in getting back into EMS. Since I'm a recovering alcoholic (seven years sober), a city official decided to check with the city workforce attorney to see if I qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act. It's just another bureaucratic delay, as far as I'm concerned.

Congrats on your accomplishment, brings up a Question, is a recovering Alcoholic, always an alcoholic?

My dad was 23 yrs sober, was he still an alcoholic when he died?

Is there such a thing as a recoverd Alcoholic?

Just Curious.

People in recovery are always considered to be alcoholics. They're simply considered to be in remission. All it takes is one drink to slip from remission into active alcoholism. The American Medical Assn and Alcoholics Anonymous don't consider "recovered" as a legitimate term to use. I've encountered two people who called themselves recovered, but that was by their own definition.

Wait, you're saying that you can get disability assistance for being an alcoholic?

So, ONE sip of the Booze makes you an alcoholic? Brutal.

But sober or not, you're called an alcoholic? Well, that's an incentive-killer.

The way I understand it, the Americans with Disabilities Act only applies to alcoholics who are in recovery. Active users of alcohol or drugs aren't covered. I'm not sure what being an ADA-qualified person means. It doesn't give priority to employment and an employer can actually place restrictions on the person in recovery, such as requiring AA meetings or drug testing.

One slip of consuming alcohol moves one from the "recovering alcoholic" column to "actively using alcoholic" column.

Yep... Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. It makes for some odd conversation moments, since when someone is referred to as an alcoholic, most people think of them as someone who's still drinking like a fish. I've known people who've been sober for 55 years and they're still medically and legally considered an alcoholic.

I dunno...my cousin was definitely an alcoholic and will freely admit it. he stopped drinking for a number of years but now is able to drink under control. He drinks but always stays in control. Is he still an alcoholic?

I doubt he was really an alcoholic. He may have been an "alcohol abuser" in his younger years. A real alcoholic can't stop at one or two drinks. It's either nothing at all or shitfaced loaded. In fact, I (and dozens of other alcoholics I know) are absolutely baffled how someone can have just one or two beers. Hell, if you're not doing at least a six-pack, it ain't worth drinking.

Im going to get splaped for this, whatever.

I was an serious addict for 18 yrs. More than a party. I have 22yrs clean of drugs and alcohol, 2/22/2010. Now Im a sober person not just clean. I say this because. Sobriety for me comes from knowing and being a Christian. The bible speaks on sobriety only comes through Christ and the Holy Spirit. I have no disire to be one step away from a drink. No matter what in life slaps me in the face.I have had some bad ones. Those feelings are gone forever. I have ways of coping that only God can do.

Im no longer an addict. Im a child of God. I refuse to put a label on myself of, Hello my name is Eddie Im an addict or alcholic. Iam not. Those days are over. I dont need a chip or a sponsor to prove sobriety. I have been supernaturaly delivered by the Lord. God permantly rewired my brain.

Hello, my name is Eddie Im a child of God and Jesus is my Lord. Im never one step from a drunk. I dont expect any to believe this until you experiance it your self.

I believe you Eddie, are two ways IMO to rid yourself for good from alcohol.

You can be forced to Quit and always be a dry drunk, or you can accept the fact that god will help you be sober forever, if you keep up a daily, non-forced dialog with your savior, alcohol serves no purpose in your life any longer.
