Has anyone changed the inner tie rods on their ST. I have had a knocking sound in the front end for a while now and the only thing that seems to be a little loose is the tie rod. I have replaced the outer tie rods, ball joints and wheel bearings over the past year.

Just wondering if they screw on like the outer tie rods.

Thanks

Jeff

Jeff, not sure about the trac. In most rack & pinion units, they screw on. Some units I have been able to remove the inners with out a special socket. You will have to slide the boots off to see if they are accessable. crank the steering left and right. Then you can see if they are exposed enough to unsrcew, with hand tools. If not some stores may loan you the socket.

Depending on your millage. Also the $$ involved. Might not cost much more to replace the rack unit with a rebuilt. It will come with the inner tie rods.

Jeff, if you replace the rack, don't go with the re-man from NAPA. I went through 2 before I got one that worked. They were OK about the warranty, but it was a pain.

I have found that you can only get inner tie rods for our sport tracs from Carquest(world-pac) or dealer. Any place else will list a rack! I have replaced one of my inners. It will need a inner tie rod tool.

Yes the inner tie rods just screw into the rack and pinion. FWIW I have never in 20+ years seen a inner tie rod end cause any kind of noise in the front end
